What type of excerises are best for working on core, especially the back, besides cruntches and cardio?

Planks are very good for the core. As long as you are keeping your core engaged while you are doing exercises, you are working your core. Pushups with the core engaged are good also.

It depends. Why do you ask? If you have a problem with your back, state the diagnosis.

pull ups did a lot to add muscle in my mid back and helped with some tricky back pain I had been having.

Look at today's video on the blog for the 20 min streaching workout. It has a lot of back and core exercises.
