I got food poisoning once after eating smoked turkey. To this day I cannot eat it and i prefer to avoid most other smoked meats as well.

If you look up "emetic" you will see that a lot of addictions are treated by pairing with tablets that make you feel sick. The brain will link x item with feeling sick and will avoid x.

I think it's an evolutionary self preservation thing to avoid stuff that makes you sick.

I got really sick after eating some strawberries a few years ago, and now I'm very hesitant to eat anything with strawberries.

This is such an interesting topic! I have seen kids throwing up foods they don't like (Nanny 911) & I assumed it was just a really strong-willed kid being defiant. Maybe there is more to it.
I was forced to eat applesauce & fruit salad (from a can, sticky & syrupy ugh) when I was a kid, & I loathed them both. I hated throwing up even more, so that wasn't an option haha. I would usually try to sneak a mouthful to the trashcan or toilet. My brother choked on Easter ham once & he would always gag if he tried to eat it after that.
The only thing that has provoked gag reflex as an adult was undercooked chicken (probably for my own safety), rare beef, or smelly cheese. I can tolerate applesauce now, but I choose not to eat that crappy fruit salad!

Yup, I had that for years, too.

I don't think my daughter got "conditioned" to not like green beans, though. She just doesn't like them. And when forced to eat them, she threw them up.

I think it goes back to our ancestors some of us developed the ability to taste the bitter compounds in foods or off flavors to alert other members in our group that a food was poisonous. That is why the body and mind react so violently it literally screams...POISON! You can overcome this though it just takes time, patience, and looking at different ways to prepare the food that is so off putting. Or you can just not eat it :)
