Steroid weight gain ???

Due to various health issues my wife uses prescription steroids several times per year. She always struggles to prevent weight gain while on a course of steroids.
Could some experienced people give their experience with this issue? Is it appetite increase that is the issue? Bloating? Water retention? Metabolic changes? What causes the weight gain?
