I've been overweight most of my adult life. I was a yo yo dieter from 20 to 60. I'd had years of issues with hypoglycemia, degenerative disc disease and fatty liver disease. My health was deteriorating fast and I had tried everything, multiple times.
Finally in May of 2013, I had gastric bypass surgery.
My weigh loss to date is 102 pounds from my highest. I'm thrilled with the results.
Learning to eat has its own set of challenges. This is NOT the easy way out and I stand by that statement 1000 percent. It is the hardest thing I have ever done. Giving up sweets was not the challenge. ...learning to manage which proteins I can tolerate without my stomach rejecting it has been the challenge.
I no longer eat for comfort or pleasure. I eat fuel for my body. Having this surgery and not following the rules is pure stupidity in my opinion. If one isn't 100 percent committed to following the instructions, don't do it. That is a guaranteed failure.
I use quality Bariactric vitamins, Bariactric quality protein shakes (on rare occasion.)
The one thing I was not prepared to face is even worse chronic back pain. I am disabled now, because I carried that weight for so many years. My spine has degenerated so that I am in constant pain. I had hoped losing the weight would help. It has not. I am not a candidate for back surgery, and am not certain I would agree to it if I were, since fusion very rarely works.
In spite of this, I have no regrets. Had I not lost the weight, I definitely would have suffered more serious problems long term from DDD or Fatty Liver disease.
What people fail to realize is that the package often belies what's going on inside. Just because I look great is in no way an indicator of my physical condition.
