Core training after abdominal surgery...

So, I had surgery to repair an inguinal hernia last month, and I'm looking for some simple core strengthening exercises to do. The Dr says I still have another week to go before he recommends any type of core training, so I want to have a plan in place and ready to start. I have not been very diligent as far as core/strength training up to this point. I do walk/run 20+ miles a week.

I would recommend a steady walk at first but 3 months is ideal time to wait after abdominal surgery. Gentle swimming and maybe beginners pilates to get back to it but don't push it as the abdominal wall will still be weak and the sutures won't have bedded in yet also if there is a mesh it takes time for the body to fibre with it. Rush it and you will end up with a larger hernia in it's place.
See it all to often at work for reoccurring hernias as people go back to manual jobs and exercise far too soon

Try working with a physical therapist at the start. That is what they are trained for.

Take it easy the first three months, walking at a steady pace but not running or such. I had surgery last year and try to exercise a month after, not good at all :-(

The best advice I can add is to ease back into it, like you were starting brand new ... and to listen to your body. After a significant layoff, you can't just jump right back into it.

A good PT or certified trainer consultation would definitely help you get restarted the right way.
