Heavy Bag

Before anyone says it, I did a search. There was nothing recent so I thought I would ask again.
Today is my birthday and my wife and kids gave me a gift card to Dicks, for the purpose of buying a heavy bag. I have always talked about it but never wanted to spend the money. I have googled heavy bag workouts, I was just curious if anyone on here had experience with using a heavy bag? What works best? What kind of results? etc
Thanks

I thought they censored the word Dicks?
Anyway, i use a hanging bag. It's only 70 lbs, so it moves around a bit, which i personally like because it simulates a person moving around. But it's sand, and sand settles, so it gets really hard & painful toward the bottom. Not good for kicking.
Here's a decent guide on choosing a bag -

Apparently not censored, interesting.
I use the heavy bag at my gym - once I have a house of my own, I plan on buying a heavy bag (and enough stuff so I can work out at home if I want).
I don't know of any formal workouts, most of what I've found is just tabata training - hit the bag as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds, rest for 10, repeat for around 8. A quick google search turned this up, which may be even better for that.
Personally, as I don't box but do karate, I set a timer for a few minutes and rotate between hard and fast punching, moving around the bag and throwing occasional jabs, kicks, etc. I also just love hitting things, so if I have a bad day, I just go in and hit it with not much of a plan. It does great on arms and I've noticed an increase in speed and power, but I don't train exclusively on a heavy bag so I'm not sure what's due to that and what's due to other exercise.0 -

Boxing, punching bag. It's in there.
It's about the same as brisk walking in terms of burn, maybe a touch higher. But hard to get accurate because so much depends on fitness level and exertion level.
I love mine. It's a hell of a workout, in ways completely different from running or lifting. I do a lot of footwork work, jabbing to start, then moving into longer and heavier combinations. Always with correct footwork.0 -
I personally prefer Everlast and their heavy bags, I did karate for five years have a black belt and it is definitely my bag of choice.0

Heavy bag is an intense workout if you are throwing elbows, knees, and whipping in kicks. Nice gift!!
I don't like bottom anchored ones as much. Free swinging is best in my book
You can't do a leg sweep and jump back up to a strike position on an anchored bag
Kind of a critical skill for real life self defense. Because you are gonna get knocked down.....and people move.
