Which diet

I would like to loose 24lb, but don't know whether to just count calories or do something like Slimming world or the 123 diet.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the 123 plan? The only review i can find is an article in the Mirror and a nutritionist commenting, that the plan didn't seem to provide you with all the nutrients you need.
If i did decide to go down the calorie counting route. Other than the obvious and cutting out junk food and processed food, what else should i be doing. What foods would be more beneficial.
I did think of making an appointment with a nutritionist, but money is tight, and from what i have read, it isn't just a one off visit. ( If it was a one off visit i could perhaps shoulder the cost)
Any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Nicola

How about the "Eat Less Calories than you Burn" diet?

    It's free, sustainable, and educational.

    Just a thought.

    1. Enter stats into MFP and set for x amount of weight loss.
    2. Eat to the number that MFP gives you.
    3. get a food scale and weigh all solid foods, and as many liquids as possible.
    4. log everything
    5. make sure that you are using correct MFP database entries
    6. realize that there are no bad foods and that while the majority of foods should come from nutrient dense sources, there is nothing wrong with having pizza, ice cream, cookies, etc, as long as ones micro and macro needs are met.
    7. macro setting are typically .85 grams of protein per pound of body weight; .45 grams of fat per pound of body weight; fill in rest with carbs.
    8. find a form of exercise that you like and do it < not necessary for weight loss, but is for overall health and body comp.

    couple stickies I would recommend:

So if i set my calories to 1500 and earn 300 through exercise. If i don't eat those calories back. Is that eat less than you burn?

MFP is designed for you to eat back your exercise calories, however the burns tend to be overinflated. Say you burn 300 calories, I'd suggest only eating back 150 of those calories.

When people say "eat less than you burn", that means you should eat less calories than you burn all day, just by living and being active.

If you generally burn, say, 2100 total calories a day - which would include your BMR (the calories you burn just by being alive) and all calories burned through normal activities and exercise - then anything below that will be "less than you burn."

I don't eat my exercise calories back. I use them as my "cushion" for a bit of sauce here or a taste while cooking there. I also don't stress about my calorie goal. I set it at a one pound per week loss and strive to eat under it. So far it has worked. I'm just over half-way through my weight loss journey. Best of luck to you - you can do this!

    Hi, welcome on board :)

I couldn't do "a diet" as I wouldn't be happy with out the things I like, things like pizza, chocolate or alcohol. However I can easily stick to eating/drinking less than I burn.

You can send me a friends request if you like and you can see my daily food diary to see that you really can eat what you like, just less of it.

Life is too short to not have the things you like!

You need to eat less than your TDEE, not BMR

    Basically, thats it.
for a 0.5 pound a week loss, eat 250 calories less than maintenance
for a 1 pound a week loss, eat 500 less than maintenance.

If you eat your exercise calories back, eat 50-60% of the burn because they tend to be overinflated.

I want to do things properly, rather than a quick fix. Plus i am nursing, so need to ensure i don't jeopardise that.

Or you can skip the calculators entirely. They're all guesses, anyway.

Eat at 1500 calories/day for a few weeks. Track your progress - if are not losing at the rate you should be losing at, drop by 100-200 calories/day. If you're losing too fast and are seriously low on energy, add a couple of hundred calories a day.

Adjust over time, as necessary. Which you'll have to do with the calculator method, anyway.

Why don't you just enter your stats and goal into MFP and eat what it tells you to eat? And try that for 6-8 weeks before making changes?

MFP will calculate your calorie deficit for you once you enter some basic information.

I wouldn't subscribe to any "fad" diets. Eating healthy is a way of life and you'll need something you can stick with for the long-haul. I would stick with counting calories, to answer your basic question!

If you need support along the way, feel friend to add me as a friend. The more the merrier!
