Dieting during medical marijuana smoking

Change your strain. Certain strains will give you the munchies, just like certain strains will make you tired. It's the difference between Indica and Sativa. Talk to your pharma (I'm assuming you're a pharmie) and have them suggest a different breed that doesn't have the undesired effects.
*ahem* Not that I'd know anything about pot.0 -

Since it's population studies and not controlled experiments, it could be a correlation (rather than causation.) Depending on what they control for in the analysis, it could be that pot users are more likely to be young, active, outdoorsy, affluent, etc. any and all of which would make them weigh less, on average, than the average of the broader population.
This would be my guess. Colorado has relatively low obesity rates yet marijuana use is legal.0 -
Try to work out why you want to get high. I mean the real reasons you want to be detached. Then, try to work out what it is you are trying to fill in your life with the food you crave. For this step, I recommend you get a counsellor to talk to about your past or your disappointments in life etc. , the things that bubble to the surface when you are high that make you try to fill the void with food. Don't speak to the counsellor when you are high either.
Maybe you are getting high for the wrong reasons, maybe you just need a satisfying hobby that keeps you busy enough not to want to eat and smoke lots.
If this all checks out and you genuinely just want to be detached or your medical situation leaves you with this 'side effect', then as suggested, prepare your snacks and food for the day before you disconnect from the matrix and stick to those prepared foods.
Some people have little self control in this state and those that do find their sense of self control does not carry through to the real world, either way, keep a check on everything, pizza delivery and pot make for a slippery slope.
Good luck.0 -
Just because it's legal doesn't make it good for you! I realize there aren't as many bad effects as most other drugs, but the fact stands that it IS a drug. Like someone else said, it's like getting drunk. Doing anything to yourself that causes you to lose willpower is probably not good in any respect.
The way I see it: smoking is a want, being a healthy weight is a need... ultimately you have to choose what's actually important to you. Unless you have a medical issue that requires you to need pot I really don't see why you would chose to use something that impairs your faculty or judgments.
ok, I see you've edited to specify medical use... in that case, I would talk to your doctor about it. I'm sure s/he wants you to be a healthy weight as well as using the prescription for its intended use.0 -
That's like a post saying you get drunk then eat 2 pizzas and make a fort out of the boxes.
The food isn't the issue its the loss of control from self inflicted drug use.
Or maybe plan a head and have healthy snacks layed out on a plate.
I recommend carrot and celery sticks, soak then in water and different food colouring so when your high you think your eating music or colours. Job done.
Ahhhh.........
Priceless.
This is the best I got:
But, don't forget to eat this first.

^ This, and exactly this.
Blue Dream is a great strain to try. It's a sativa-dominant strain, and is even great for before working out (no couch lock).
Where I live (Oregon) recreational is now legal. However, my family grows medical marijuana for dispensaries. Try out some different strains (I suggest sativa-dominant).

I used to smoke maybe 3 times a week in college and was in absolutely phenomenal shape then. Then again, when you're 21 and have no job, it's a bit easier.
I'd be worried as to the effect of testosterone production more than appetite.0 -
Most people that smoke mariquana have problems putting on weight? Try snacking on healthy food if you get the munchies!! Most strains of mariquana can cause your appetite to be suppressed?0
-
Try fruits, yogurts are pretty good too.0

Wait, the OP stated he is smoking it medicinally; which, unless they are 'self-medicating' (naughty, naughty), means that they are being advised by a medical professional and this is being prescribed as a treatment. All you people telling OP to 'just quit taking drugs' need to think about that....would you tell someone to stop taking any other prescribed medication just because you don't agree with it personally?
When it comes to the munchies, not much I can recommend....air popped popcorn??0 -

What's next? People will be saying we should follow the diet advice of Dr. Oz, because he's a doctor?0 -

I am not even getting into this with you, because I know you are not worth it and you have nothing to contribute to the OP's original question and are just spoiling for a fight. Move it along, Mr Fish. Ain't nobody got time for that. I wasn't making any sort of inflammatory remark, I was simply giving people something to think about. Medical marijuana and its benefits has far more scientific research and evidence backing it up than anything Dr Oz says, a fact which I am sure yourself and most people on here are aware of.
Good day.0 -
I don't smoke but I have gotten hooked on cut up cucumbers and everything hummus when I have a few beers.0

That was what I was going to suggest. The dispensaries are very knowledgeable about which strains will have certain effects.

Ask Gary Wenk why smoking pot gives you the munchies. Betcha anything he knows.0

I second air-popped popcorn and sugar free jelly (jello)0

links to several studies that have been done.
Hadn't really thought about this, I live in Colorado, maybe I should rethink my diet?0 -

Yep. Smoking pot has nothing to do with being overweight or not, but the calorie consumption does. Pot has different effects on people. Back in the day when I used to smoke it, it made me very grumpy but did nothing for my appetite one way or the other.
OP, if you're trying to lose weight and your RX of pot gives you the munchies, have you thought of talking to your doctor and asking for a medication that does not increase your appetite?0 -
Try an Indica strain rather than Sativa, if that's what you're currently using. Sativa is known to be more of an appetite stimulant.0
-
The OP has said he uses MEDICAL marijuana for back pain. This sounds like a medical issue and a legitimate use to me. He is asking for help, not for people to tell him to quit smoking.
OP, I don't have any good suggestions, other than smoking before mealtimes, ingesting rather than smoking, and keeping healthier food in the house to munch on.0 -
Smoke after your meal. Drink water if you get cravings.0

People can be experts in their domain and still be ignorant outside of it.
So could you explain what is medically wrong with someone taking marijuana if it is prescribed properly and used for treating a condition it is capable of helping?0 -

I'm a heavy recreational user and I get the munchies very bad, that's why I'm here in fitness pal trying to lose 5 kilos from the munchies. Sometimes I can control them, but sometimes not. Yes I think it is all in your head. What works for me is to distract myself, go for a walk, and try to not think about food. Drink "mate tea" or "coca tea" (I don't know if coca leaves tea is legal over there) but mate should be. It suppresses the appetit. Munchies do not last for ever, they come in "waves" so if you distract yourself for at least 20 min, and drink the teas, they will go away.0

You sure? How much we talking for the weed budget?

I agree with what other smokers have said-change your strain or have an activity planned for after you smoke. I like smoking pre workout or before I eat a healthy satisfying meal. It can be a bit of a mental game but once you find the balance it gets easy.0

The big reasons for prescribing (or suggesting or allowing) are to increase appetite and because some say it helps with nausea. If lack of appetite or nausea were problems, you wouldn't be upset about the increased appetite. You'd be glad.
Why are you doing it? Is there some medication that would accomplish your goal and not increase your appetite?0
