If you're in pain you should get checked out by a physio just to ensure that you're not injured. I have very tight calves which can get pretty painful, so I have to stay on top of it. I trigger point them daily with a hard rubber ball, foam roller them and also wear compression calf sleeves occasionally. It's a bit annoying but I've incorporated it into my exercise routine and it really makes a huge difference.

If I don't warm up and cool down with running, my legs become very tight so I make sure I do both! I also can recommend a foam roller0
