Competitive Swimming Needs

My niece is 9 (going on ten years old) and wants to join the local YMCA swim team (we don't have one at our school). She is progressing well in swim stroke classes and now I need to get her stuff to set her up for swim team. What are some good (but not terribly expensive) brands and items I need for her to do swim team?

Also, on a side note, I am interested for myself as well, as I am planning on training for a triathlon for next year, possibly late this fall and need swim gear. I've got the running and bike gear, just not the swim stuff.
