It's also not necessary to weigh at all. You can lose weight without a food scale (or a people scale.)
People don't have to defend their choice to weigh...or to not weigh.
IRL, people make fun of me weighing food. It's annoying.
This!!! I tracked for almost 2 months and from there I never track or weigh. I'm down 75 pounds since jan 1. I'm eating plenty of whole foods and exercising. It does get annoying when people insist you must weigh your food. And this is me going on 2 week long vacations and having chest meals or days often.
Good for you!!! As long as you eat less and move more, it will happen. And only YOU know if you're doing that! Of course logging on MFP has been a great mind-opener to me to realize just how much I am eating and how many calories I'm burning through exercising. Wouldn't trade it for the world!0 -

But you're not logging. So it's safe to assume that you're making more sensible choices. If you're logging your food but are completely underestimating your food intake, it's just pointless to even log.0 -

Weighing is the most accurate form of estimating. OPs who complain about not losing are normally in that situation because they are eating more than they think or burning less. On that basis the method they are usually using is not accurate weighing and being at a consistent deficit, buty some other form of estimating. The answer is to get better control they shift to the most accurate form of esimating to return to weight loss.
The act of weighing involves scales imo. Some people estimate using other methods and it cna work fine, but the people who come onto these forums complaining about not losing are doing so because its not working for them and thats becayse they havent found a way of achieveing an accurate deficit.
There are many more threads on these forums of people who dont realise, listen to what theyve been advised and then start losing again. Its not uncommon for OPs to start with one story and change it as soon as questions are asked. Responders can onlu go on the information posted and its right if they have doubts, then they ask further questions. Couldnt disagree more with the OP .0 -

I completely agree. But if you're not willing to weigh your food, don't come and complain if you don't lose weight even though you're 'eating so little'.
But yeah I saw that thread where someone said she weighs everything and people didn't seem to believe her, and it boggles my mind a little bit too... but a lot of people say that they weigh everything too and when you look at their diary, it's pretty dubious, because everything is exactly 100g or 28g or something...
I do that though! If the bag of doritos says that 28g is 140 cal, I will measure out 140 g every time! Even if I have to break a chip in half to get that weight, I will do it.
The same goes with my English muffin. If it says 61g is a serving, and my muffin is 65g, I will pick off pieces of the muffin until it is the 61g it is supposed to be.0 -

I've weighed and measured my food since way before MFP. Years of Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. Any diet works if you practice portion control and become aware of how much food you put in your mouth.
In the final analysis, it comes down to consistency, commitment and consciousness.0 -

I respectfully disagree. Yes, food scales can come in very handy. But if you eat half a cake, you're not going to weigh that. Unless you are truly determined to lose weight, even scales won't be needed. However, it is very helpful to log your weight here as then you can vary your trend for the good.0 -

Unless you are truly determined to lose weight, even scales won't be needed. However, it is very helpful to log your weight here as then you can vary your trend for the good.
Why not? I'd log half the cake, and know I'm 1500 calories over that week, see what my weight loss is over the month, do the math, and still get some useful information regarding my TDEE.
Also I've been truly determined to lose weight, and I've eaten cake, and I've lost 80 pounds (minus the 2 I gained back on vacations). So I don't see your point. More information is always a good thing. Some people don't need it, but others can really benefit from it.
And sure, if for you 'truly determined to lose weight' means eating broccoli and chicken breast every day, then yeah, you probably won't need a scale, but I'm not THAT determined to lose weight, so I use one.0 -

You fail to understand. Its a choice in what method you wnat to use to estimate. Weighing is the most accurate. For those who arent losing its the method recommended because its superior and will produce a better result in caclulating a deficit. You can use other methods if you wish to and for many people they do not need the level of accuracy and can eyeball portions. Its still a less accurate method.

My problem is I would pick off the pieces of the english muffin and then pop them in my mouth. So, if I weighed the english muffin or piece of bread or whatever, I would just up the serving size in my log.

Those who are not losing know exactly why they aren't. They don't need a scale to tell them so. They know they are eating too much and exercising too little or not at all. Scales come in very handy for those who want to be shocked into how much they are actually eating, as opposed to what they thought they were eating, and want to change their habits. The fact is that most overweight people blame their extra pounds on everything except overeating and under-exercising. They don't want to weigh their food. They want to lose weight, but want it to magically disappear without any effort on their part.
Once anyone DECIDES to lose weight, they will do it. THEN they will use their scales and log everything onto MFP. But until they DECIDE, they won't do anything but complain.

I'm sure someone mentioned this but i think people forget that on a digital scale, you can weigh in grams, and toggle to see the measurement in a different metric. and that is ok too ! lol0

Wow good one for generalising.
The point is that people who post on these forums asking for answers about why they have plateaud, do not understand why they arent losing becayse thats why they ask on the forum. The most common query on these forums.
The most common reason why they arent losing is becayse their method of deficit calculation is inaccurate, which then means the response is to choose a more accurate method which helps them get to deficit and to start losing again. They DO need a scale for that. In many many instances people think they are weighing or measuring accurately when in fact they are not. Many do not use a scale, many regard cups as adeqiate, but the fact they are not losing shows them differently.
Many has been the response by people who start to lose again once they start to measure accurately.They know they are eating too much and exercising too little or not at all...................... I think the issue is that some of the people who don't weigh/log food accurately complain that they're not losing weight. Well, of course you're not losing weight if you're not being honest.0 -

I don't even own a food scale right now. Granted weighing foods is more better than guesstimating, it's just not something I can see myself doing long term. So at some point I might get a scale and use it now and then to make better guesstimates.
But for me, I lost about half my weight without logging any food or counting calories either. Since I tend to exercise more when I'm seeking weight loss, I worry more about more accurate exercise logging and go from there.
There are very few rules that are a must do thing really, it's all about preference and doing what fits best for you.0
