I got the Fitbit Charge HR just the other day. I really like the integrated heart rate monitoring, I like how it tracks my sleep with no prompting, and most importantly, I like how it automates the calculating of my calorie burn.

Fitbit has greatest market penetration and brand recognition, so you're going to get mostly that recommended.

From what I've read Fitbit has an easy to use interface, and the replacement cycle is pretty good. That said the replacement cycle being good just indicates quite a high level of defective units being shipped. Fitbit are moving from simple step trackers into more sophisticated devices embedding optical HR monitoring and GPS, however aren't really making much impact with either of those.

Polar has come from the HR monitoring world and are adding in step counting functionality and GPS. Their GPS is better than Fitbit, but not as good as Garmin or Suunto. Polar push the HR as a method of estimating calories quite strongly, largely as that's their heritage. If you buy into that marketing nonsense then they're a good choice.

Garmin have come into the step counter world from he higher end GPS and sports tracking world. Their GPS functionality is superior, their HR monitoring is good and the step counting aspect is fairly trivial to add. Their web interface is a bit clunky though. When I see runners, cyclists and triathletes using step counters they tend to be Garmins.

Personally I have a Garmin Vivosmart. I'm not convinced that there is a compelling case for step counters to be honest. It doesn't tell you anything you don't already know.
