Do You Dress Up When You Go Out?

I am not talking errands, home depot or things like that (although even when I do run errands I try to look presentable. I am not the run out in your sweats kind of girl)but if you go out to dinner, a movie, a show or maybe to the casino.
Do you make an effort and dress up when you go out? Now I'm not talking real fancy dress but for guys: a nice pair of jeans and a nice tee shirt or button down shirt with nice shoe. Ladies: A dress, skirt with a nice top or jeans with a nice top and a nice pair of shoes.
I ask because when my husband and I go out we dress up and I personally like to dress up. I have noticed that the vast majority of people don't. This past Saturday we went out to dinner and a concert. My husband wore a nice pair of jeans, button up shirt and a fancy pair of shoes. I wore a nice summery dress, heels, had my hair up nice, make up and jewelry. As we are eating dinner we see that no one is dressed up (and this is a nice place). Most people looked like they were on their way back from Home Depot or running errands with the kids and this isn't the first time we've noticed it. We will go out to drinks at a total dive in our town and we still dress up!
I just don't get it. Any one else notice the same?

Dress for the occasion. Going out for a date night with hubby including a movie and medium priced sitdown? Jeans and a nicer top. Going out for fancy dinner and drinks downtown? Heels and a dress. Going to a sporting event (which is really a more common date for us lol), team colors!0

I'm a notorious overdresser. I'll take any opportunity to get dolled up!0
-
Meh, dress up if it makes you feel good. Don't worry about what other people do.0

We usually dress for the occasion for sure. It really depends on where you live.....I'm on the west coast and dressing up in Seattle is waaaay different than dressing up in LA.0

I love to dress up, and particularly do so anytime I'm going to a live show of any kind, whether it be theater, music, etc. I know not everyone follows that custom, but the one that surprises me the most is the opera. I think of that as a dressy event, and yet I see people with the entire range of dress, including jeans, when I attend the opera. The average dress is nicer. The nicer the restaurant, the more likely it is that people will dress up. Other than that, it is pretty casual at most places I see.0

I use to...now my bf takes me out to way to many nice places way to often. Half the time there's no time or notice. Plus I'm constantly on my motorcycle, no time for hair. That's precious twisty time. Oh what a terrible unpresentable life I live :bigsmile:0

Yep, I always dress for the occasion (and then some). A big plus to getting back into shape is that all of my "cute" clothes fit again (some even too big)!0

Chopping all my hair off seems to have solved the helmet head problem0 -

Yeah I believe in dressing up for the occasion. It's just awkward not to.
Last time I went out, I didn't notice what other people were wearing, but I DID notice that almost everyone was on their cell phones during their dinner. I thought that was so strange. They should have been paying attention to each other... talking to each other...not poking around on their smart phones. :-) lol0 -
I'll never forget when my brother (he's a marine) was in boot camp and we were discussing how they dress and how anal they are about their uniforms. He said that one of the higher ups (don't remember his rank) had been yelling at them and was talking about how a lot of civilians nowadays are dressed like slobs and take no pride in the way they present themselves anymore. I agree.
I'd rather be overdressed rather than underdressed. I take pride in my appearance.0 -
Yes, we both dress for the occasion.0

YES. Usually.
There are times when I'm not "dressed up". Like Saturday when i took the boys to the zoo and then dinner. I was dressed for walking a bunch at the zoo.0 -

Despite my previous answer I agree.
In fact I prefer others don't. It give me the "edge".0 -
Of course0

yes i always like to look presentable... like you said if im just going to run to the store or hang out at a friends place and watch some football im not going to wear my wingtip shoes and a sports coat, but ill wear jeans that i look good in and a nice shirt that actually makes me look like a responsible adult. if im going to eat with friends or to some bars, then ill bust out the nice button ups, ties, vests, monkstraps etc...
maybe its particially because im single, you never know who you are going to run into. plus i always feel better about myself and more confident when i look nice.0 -
I always dress up when I go out but I always feel like the odd one out because no-one else makes an effort. To be fair though I usually enjoy the getting ready more than actually going out0
-
I try to avoid most situations where one is expected to dress up simply because I hate dressing up (and don't get me started on suits), but I will if I absolutely must.0
-
I find it funny that the OP says "Do you dress up" and then describes dressing up as jeans and a nice t-shirt....
I'm not privy to a world where jeans and a t-shirt is ever dressing up0 -
I looooove getting dolled up whenever I get a chance!
But lately, for work mostly, I've been getting a tad bit lazy with the makeup. No biggie. It's just work. Lol0 -
Very rarely....New Mexico is pretty damned casual (which is awesome). Dressing up here is pretty much your nicest pair of jeans and a shirt. Very rarely do you go out here and find people in "fancy dress." Maybe at a really high end restaurant, but that's about it...even then, it's not unusual to see jeans and maybe a jacket.0

Absolutely. It is a compliment to whoever you are going out with to make an effort. :flowerforyou:0
