Happy Hour - what's the best approach?

I have to go 'out for drinks' with colleagues every once in a while, any suggestions on the best drink to have? I know water would be the best answer but when meeting at a bar, it just seems anti-social so am looking for an alternative.
Suggestions on how not to partake of the appetizers would be nice too.

I always do a blueberry vodka soda (just blueberry vodka, soda water, and a lime wedge), about 70 calories a drink and limit myself to 2 with a water before, in between, and after to slow down.0

I will have a mini meal before I leave work to help curb my appetite for bar food, and then I will usually have a dirty vodka martini or a glass of wine. Those last a while for me.
You really have to watch for mixers. I wish I liked soda water, but there is a bitter taste to me so I will only have vodka tonic on rare occasions. They will go down way too easily!
Diet soda with liquor is another good option, Sprite 0 with Three Olives cherry vodka is delicious!0 -
mm that sounds good.
I usually ask for a diet rum and coke, virgin please.
or something along those lines. I think the humor makes it less awkward.
or I just say, water please. and forget everyone else0 -
for the most part I'm partial to grapefruit flavored sparkling water with vodka...I usually have a couple every evening. on the weekends I might have a couple of beers or the occasional margarita.
if i was just an every once in awhile social drinker, i'd probably just opt for whatever i felt like having and not worry a whole lot about it...which would probably be a grapefruit flavored sparkling water with vodka...at least in the summer.0 -

Thanks for all the great ideas... I'm not big on soda water but maybe that's the best it'll definitely slow me down :-) and I like the idea of a snack before going and water before, with, and after each drink.0
