Here's a little of my story. I have had back problems since I can remember. I'm 32 I have 2 kids. Had a full time job until the fired me for being out per doc and ended up having surgery. I'm post surgery with no restrictions. Still have pain but I can walk and my husband no longer has to work 40+ hours come home cook, clean a little or have to shave my legs anymore. My core is my problem obviously but it needs strengthening and sit ups and crunches are more harmful then helpful in my eyes. I started back up with this and doing lite exercises. I walk when I have time with 3 dogs toting me along. To be down near where I want to be I need to lose 50 pounds. Anyone have any positive feedback?

Have you tried doing yoga? I find that when I'm consistent doing yoga it really makes my core stronger, which in turn will make your back stronger. It really can be a great workout.

I think walking is a great exercise for anyone to do regardless of weight or some physical issues.

I know how bad my back has hurt in the past just for minor issues, so I can't imagine what you must have went through. I'd suggest googling back friendly exercises or core exercises & focus on doing them for a while.

Good luck on your journey :)

I don't know why but it seems scary to me. But definitely worth a shot. Thanks

Definitely give yoga a try! It's good for the mind and body. I agree that it can seem scary and intimidating, but that's only because we're assuming that everyone else in the class is an expert, but they aren't. Some may be. Some are brand new. Focus on YOU and on learning how to do it properly. Hope your back heals and if you are cleared you can also get back to work, if that is your plan.

Weight loss happens in the kitchen. Exercise is good, and yoga might be beneficial to you, but it's not necessary for weight loss. You might also talk to your doctor and see what kinds of exercise they recommend for you. They might give you some ideas you hadn't thought of or thought it wouldn't be good for you.

Motivation has to come from within. You need to take a good, honest look at WHY you're doing this. It can be because you need to be healthy. It can be as minor as wanting to be able to wear a different size jean. But it has to be YOUR motivation, not what other people are saying to you. Example; I needed to lose weight. My doctor and my family told me I should lose some weight. I even went up a pant size, so I knew I needed to lose weight. But it wasn't until I saw my wedding pictures and realized that I looked fat that I buckled down and kept on the wagon. I had to internalize that motivation, and that's the only thing that worked for me. So you need to find your own motivation. That will keep you moving more than anything else.

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I'm recovering from depression and a bad shoulder and I can't even imagine how much pain you are in every day. One thing that really helped me: you haven't mentioned anything about visits to a physiotherapist. I know those silly little exercises they give you seem dumb at first and like they just cause you more pain, but they can change our life. It helped me get back to using my shoulder again.

I hope you find your way soon. And hey, congratulations on getting here. That's a big step :)

I used to have back problems that started about four years ago. Either it was caused when I was accidentally dropped on my back when my drunk friend tried to pick me up.... Or it was from very heavy lifting that I was doing at the time.

I went to physical therapy and to a chiropractor, neither of which helped me. So I quit them and started up strength training and Pilates. It really helped my back problems, probably because my core was strengthened. If I were you, with your doctors approval, I would try Pilates, but start off slowly so as to avoid injury.

for someone dealing with injuries and you saying you're afraid of the idea of yoga, look at this youtube video, it's super motivating about a guy that couldn't walk without support and started doing yoga

i also do yoga in a studio a couple times a week, i like it...but surely what you eat is the most important part of this process (I've lost 90lbs so far)
