Knee Pain

Hey everyone,

So I am reaching out because I am really struggling right now. I am really trying to find exercises that I am able to do but not having much success. I am 340 lbs, f, and I have issues with my knees. I have a knee injury to my left knee and it is usually the one that gives me issue. I have been trying to do some different exercises to find something that works for me but I keep running into issues with my knee really hurting. I am doing work outs at home because I do not have the money to go to a gym or even pay to go to the pool. Getting equipment for home would be hard but I could save for it if I know what I am after.

Has anyone my size or with similar issues found things that work for them?

Stuff I have done:

walk away the pounds
walking in general (I own a fitbit so I do try to get steps in)
Hula dancing
Zumba
Cize
turbo jam
Yoga (I am not a huge fan of this because of belief reasons, please don't judge).

Thank you

Becca

Ok, i won't judge your judging of yoga. B)

How about an exercise bike or an elliptical machine? You might be able to find them on Craigslist or at thrift stores. They aren't guaranteed not to bother knees, but they often work ok. If you've never tried them, maybe get a free week pass at a local gym and try them out..

I've been using the exercises from this site to rehab my knee.
    http://www.knee-pain-explained.com/knee-strengthening-exercises.html#quads

If you have a regular bike, you can get a stand that converts it to a stationary bike. If you can walk comfortably, it's very good exercise; get good shoes. There are a lot of chair exercises for people with limited mobility, including yoga-like exercises that aren't really yoga in the spiritual sense. Good luck! It will get easier if you stick with it and take care of that precious knee.

What ever you decide to do, work in some stretching. I didn't do this and tried to do squats without proper supervision (I really do need to be watched, sometimes. ) and now I'm having knee problems. I think it was a combination of a fussy (old) knee, muscle imbalances, mobility & improper form. Anyway, I've stopped doing any kind of squats & am trying to do more stretches and foam rolling and it seems to help a little. I may not ever be able to squat *sniff*, but I don't want to ruin my knee trying. I'll just keep trying to strengthen the best I can.

I don't judge people who do yoga. I just have my beliefs that is all... I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend.

    One word.

    Swimming.

    More words.

    It's very low impact.

Is Pilates an option? It has some similarities to yoga, but there is no religious/meditation heritage to it. A lot of runners who get sidelined by stress fractures and can't do weight-bearing exercises end up in Pilates (as well as the pool) while rehabbing, so I'm assuming it can be made gentle on your knees.

Something else to consider: if you live near a YMCA with a pool, check to see if yours offers sliding scale memberships or some kind of discount/service program.

    I second cycling and swimming.
    Above the other exercises recommend.

Why? Because in cycling and swimming your body weight is not pressing down on your knees.
(I am no expert, but to me this reasoning makes sense)

Re: Walk Away the Pounds (Walk at Home, Just Walk, etc) ....

Do you do these on a carpeted surface? I find I drag my feet a bit too much (side steps, ouch!). So I place a puzzle mat on the floor & do my workout there. This gives me a bit of cushion, also good to lessen impact on a tile floor.

I'm not terribly coordinated so the twisty (Zumba) type things are kept to a minimum. My feet are slow (I don't know how else to describe it)...but the constant catch up messes with form.

Rebounders are great for low impact. Unfortunately the cheap ones you find a Wal-Mart, etc are like jumping on the floor. Higher end models (I love my Jump Sport) are very forgiving.

you know they have yoga at churches too? I've even seen programs called 'yoga for Jesus'
and if you don't like beliefs-which is vague-try gym yoga which is more stretching generally and less mind/body/spirit

for your knee, I would suggest water based activities
