Personal trainers...please help?

Hello and thanks for reading this!

I used to exercise almost daily, hiit and weight training. Then, 2 years ago, I had a pelvic organ collapse and extensive surgery to remove and repair damage.

According to my doc and everything i have read - I will never be able to lift, squat, lunge, do sit-ups or anything strenuous on the lower body. So for the last year and a half i have been terrified to do anything beyond walking! The surgery was not fun and re-repair, if it would even be possible would be even worse.

Will you please give me some ideas on preserving muscle mass without tearing these repairs? I know I am severely limited so if walking is it....then so be it. I just wanted to know if maybe I have missed something.

    I would suggest talking about this with a physical therapist rather than a personal trainer.

    Aslsmile- Thanks foe your reply.:) Yes i spoke to a physical therapist a month or so after my surgery. He told me to do kegel exercises and to potty correctly....lol. Otherwise he gave me very little. Both of my surgeons gave me different advice so i thought a PT would help. He specifically avoided my exercise question but then he was 20 min late for the 30 min appointment. I might see if our insurance covers another one in our area for a consult.

    Well, you should have recovered more from the procedure by now. A physical therapist is educated in dealing with people who are limited due to medical conditions. I really hope for you your insurance covers a couple of sessions with a therapist.
    The level of education a personal trainer requires is just not as high a physical therapist. Furthermore, without working with you in person some advice could do more harm than good.

    PTs aren't medically trained so I would be wary of trusting one over a doctor TBH

    Your doc gave you the ok to run but not to lunge? How strange.

    As a side note...I am not a "runner". More like the occasional semi-jogger during my walk. :D

    I would go back and see a consultant and then seek a referral to a physical therapist if they feel it would be benifical to get advice and a plan to rehabilitate. Personal trainers are generally not qualified to deal with your issues but will work with your health care professionals to ensure that your recovery is not compromised, further injury does not occur and that they work within any limitations you have due to your surgery.

    As a trainer if you came to me I would refer you straight back to a specialist/pt for clarification on what you can and can't do and clearance for you to undertake a work out program.

    Hey thank you so much for your reply ironmaiden4life! I do need some further clarification because I really was not given very much to go on and am not sure my doc really knew what to tell me back then. Maybe he will have more to go on now. Thank you again. :)

    You need to go see a Physical Therapist. They'll teach you the proper exercises. And prepare you for being on your own
