Non-dairy milk alternative? (UK)

Hi ya!

I'm trying to look for a decent non-dairy milk alternative. I'm not allergic to dairy, just trying because I'm curious and I like spicing things up once in a while.

I'm in the UK and I bought some Alpro Almond Milk the other day. I tried it a few weeks ago when my mum came to visit me (she's trying to avoid dairy and gluten for various reasons), and when I took a sip of it I was pleasantly surprised. Using it for cereal is unfortunately another story... I found it so watery and tasteless, it really ruined it for me.

Does anyone know of alternatives that can be easily found in the UK? I don't really want to keep buying carton and after carton and wasting them all. I'm certainly never using that for tea!

I actually quite like regular soy milk, I'm really not a fan of unsweetened almond milk, but if you buy it sweetened that kind of defeats the purpose :/

I love Silk brand. unsweetened Almond Milk. I think it tastes great and it only has 30 calories per cup! I don;t know what is available in the UK though.

My stomach's a bit sensitive to milk so I try to avoid it's pure form (cheese, ice cream, and sometimes yogurt are okay). I like lowfat soy milk or regular unsweetened soy milk. I mostly use it in my iced coffee. Almond milk is okay, but it doesn't have the creaminess of soy milk. Coconut milk...ehhh, not my cup of milk honestly, but my one friend loves it in her smoothies.

I really like soya milk too, only the unsweetened one and I like that with cereal (or in a hot chocolate!). I also like the flavoured ones (I tend to stick with the Alpro ones if/when I have them!)
I guess your other choices are things like oat milk, almond milk, goat milk or coconut milk.

Not a massive fan of coconut milk & never tried goats milk, but I like oat and almond milk!

There's also the lacto free range which tastes like normal milk, but is lactose free, but that doesn't sound like what you're after as its not an alternative as such!

I just use sweetened soya or dairy, which have similar calories/macros.

Rude Health almond milk is very tasty, but in terms of macros it's not great for my goals (very little protein).

Oh DUH, I knew I was forgetting something. SOYA MILK, I should have tried that first! I don't know why I've been focused on almond milk. Thanks everyone!

I can't say I've ever seen it. But then again, I only started thinking about non-dairy alternatives recently.

You can try making your own almond milk from raw almonds. That way you can control the thickness, etc., as well as experiment with small batches.

Here's a recipe, which I haven't tried myself but looks to be how I've made almond milk in the past:

I use Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk (well, my grocery stores' off brand, Almond Break). As others have said, unsweetened almond milk is about 30 calories a cup. I use it for cooking, cereal, etc. I don't, however, drink milk at all. I know some people don't like the taste of it, but I don't find it to be very strong at all.

I've heard good things about cashew milk and soy milk as well, but I've never tried them.

Canned coconut milk/cream worked very well for me. I often use coconut oil instead of butter in baking.

You can also use the almond milk that was too thin for cereal to make refrigerator oatmeal.

Here's one of many recipes (I used "refrigerator oatmeal no yogurt"): http://www.skinnytaste.com/2012/06/skinny-overnight-oats-in-jar.html

To me the lactose free ones taste sugary. I think it may be the enzyme they put in it to counter act the lactose. The only one that I found I liked was in Germany. Don't remember the brand. I can't get it here anyway. I just remember drinking it and thinking it tasted a little off. Then I muddled through the packaging which wasn't hard to decipher, i was just being lazy.
