Numb arms from shoulder to finger tips

Hi all! I have been increasing my weights and reps while working out, and now when I sleep, I wake up all through the night because my arm is completely numb from my shoulder to my finger tips. Any thought on how to relieve this? I'm constantly stretching my neck and shoulders, I rub out the tightness but it still won't relieve it. During the day, my arm doesn't sleep, but it gets tingly and my hand is cold. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like it could be a trapped nerve in the shoulder. You'd be best off going to a reputable physio.

I get that a lot. I think it's due to nerve issues. Kind of like carpel tunnel but in your neck.

Do you have an old pillow? Do you sleep on your side? If so, you may want to try a new pillow and maybe one specifically for side-sleepers.

I second a physiotherapist for this.

It might be Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, which involves either the nerves or blood vessels. You can read about both variants here:

I'd probably start with an orthopedist. They may refer you to a physio.
In the mean time, try this stretch for 30 seconds:

Are all your fingers affected equally, or are some worse than others?

I went through this last year and went through all types of testing. (nerve conduction study, mri, blood tests) Everything came back normal. My hand and arm would be tingle all day and fall asleep a lot at night. They finally diagnosed it as some type of nerve damage and said to not do much of anything that involved my arm for 3 months. It eventually did get better, but it will still bother me every now and then, but not nearly as bad.

I was doing a lot of planking and HIIT training, so I just modified my workouts for a little while. I am back to planking and lifting, but I also modify some of the moves so I do not put too much pressure on my arm/hand and it has helped a ton. I still push myself, but at 41 yrs old I try not to do some of the things I know might hurt worse in the long run. lol! :)

    Good luck! HTH!
