Okay I know this is totally random but I'm getting a dwarf hamster and would like some tips on how to look after him/her before I get it. I've had a Syrian before but I was really young so I can't remember much.

Also name suggestions?

Thankssss! (Again I know totes random)

We have a Syrian called Merlin. Before him we had one called Poppy.

They are pretty easy to look after. Clean their cages regular, fresh food and water each day. We give the mixed hamster food but give him fresh fruit (not citrus), veggies, bits of cheese and even things like a bit of scrambled egg.

Make sure it has something for gnawing on and plenty of bedding and sawdust for burrowing. Try and handle it every day so it gets used to it and has some exercise. A ball and a wheel are good for exercise too.

We have a dwarf named Hyper Joe; that sob is the most bizarre animal for as little as he is: hangs upside down in his cage, squeals, tries to attack you when you try to feed him... I'd personally never get such a small hamster, but he was a gift.

Had two hamsters when I was growing up. The first on was Sam cause I couldn't tell if it was a girl or a boy. The second was Wolfgang called him Wolfie for short. I can't remember which one got out of the cage and ate my mom's wedding dress. It was from her first marriage so she wasn't really upset about it.

We've had Pip and Zip, Booty, and something else I don't remember. Pip ate Zip. Or at least chewed him in half through the trunk and lopped his head off to boot. Remember kids, sometimes establishing dominance needs boundaries.

We've also had two guinea pigs, Rosie and Donut. Donut turned evil and took the name Lord Donuhmort.

This... I bought my God Daughter a hamster for her 6th Birthday thinking I was the BEST God Mother EVER! She loved him, found out a few days later that he was a she and she gave birth to 9 babies and then ATE ALL OF THEM! This poor child was devastated and I turned out to be the worst God Mother EVER!

The crazy part is they lived together for a year or more before this happened.

That is crazy, maybe the one that got eaten was sick. They do that kind of only the strong can survive type stuff. LOL!

Oh wow thanks everyone! Didn't expect a response :) I'm thinking about getting a zoozone cage and meshing the top as my last hamster escaped from his cage D:

I had two Russian hamsters when I was young - so cute! Called Bubble and Squeak.

Also had a rat - rats are amazing pets! He was called Sensai. Loved him to bits, took him everywhere with me.

Get a young one and handle him/her as much as poss - less likely to bite that way. Google best feeds for him/her. Remember that they are generally shortlived. Do your research. Enjoy your little furball! :)

    Aren't they guinea pigs?

I'm not really a fan of rats.. They're cool I guess but no.

I don't plan on letting it roam around my home, probably will get a playpen. I don't own a bookcase and I clean daily so no need to worry about that :)
