Spray Oil (pam)

Hi there,

I used spray olive oil (generic or pam) on almost everything - sauteing vegetables, cooking fish/chicken, etc.

It says 0 calories for a certain percentage of a second spray - but I spray probably 2-3 seconds worth. I've never logged this - but being as this is oil, a high calorie food, I think I should - and I might be messing up my log because of this.

Any suggestions on how you calculate this?

Thanks!

I doubt 2-3 seconds is messing you up, but I can see how spray oil can be a challege.

Weight how much you add and then count it as olive oil.

Better off using real oil like coconut. Pour a little on the pan and wipe the excess.
There a refillable pump spray bottles too. So you can have just oil without the preservatives and propellants.
Then you can use a measuring spoon or digital scale to measure how much per X number of pumps.
PAM claims zero calories by using a "serving" size the is <1g.

I tend to not worry about it that much (I use a few spritzes of pam when grilling, but a lot of it is wiped off afterwards). Could you log the pam as 20 calories?

I saw a thing on TV about how many calories are actually in that stuff - it wasn't all that low. I agree with the person who said you should weigh it and then log it as oil, if you have to use it.

    Or just use real oil.

My feeling is that if the entire bottle has 500-600 calories, and it takes me at least 2 months (usually more) to use it, I'm unconcerned with that negligible amount of calories.
    Assuming 600 calories per bottle and ~30days in a month, 600/60= 10 calories/day.
If you're concerned because you use it more often or in larger quantities, then use olive oil and measure it out. I have Filipo Berrio extra virgin olive oil and it's only 33 calories per 2 Tbsp.

A quick internet search shows that it's 7 calories for a 1 second spray. The source says that it's posted on Pam's website but I couldn't find it during my quick search. 7 calories sounds about right though.

You can replace spray oils from cans with a Misto
