Active in late middle age--trying to stay fit and strong

I live in a very active mountain community--many friends my age are ski racers, long distance runners, mountaineers (think ice climbing and Himalayan heroes) and bike racers. Hard to feel strong and fit with a desk job. Any hints?

In school many years ago, I worked as a security guard. Every 30 minutes I got up and performed some calisthenics. Each set took 90 seconds.

Thanks-great idea. I just skimmed a book at the library yesterday (You Can Lose Weight Without Exercise or something like that) that said scheduled exercise great if you can do it, but moving more and using a pedometer plus daily 5 minute bursts of planned activity are just as effective. He did also mention some dietary management and gave recipes.
