One weight success, one small NSVs!

I've been doing MFP for one week, and two days now. I've been following the guidelines; eating a lot more vegetables, a lot less sugar and meat, and drinking a LOT more water; and I make myself get up and MOVE every day, even if just to work in the yard.

I weigh myself each morning, because I want an accurate account of how my body reacts to my monthly cycle for the first month.
This morning, I passed the 10 pound mark for a total of 11 pounds! I'm so excited!

I know I have a long way to go, and I know that a lot of it was water weight. But I am still proud of the results!

Last night, not for the first time, I got really hungry late at night. I'm a late night snacker, and breaking that habit is going to be tough for me. My one-year-old son is struggling with teething this week, and has been very fussy and waking up a lot at night. I was stressed and worried, and just wanted to eat that leftover pizza that is waiting in the freezer for my husband to take to lunch.

But I said to myself, "Lets just wait it out. If you really, REALLY want to eat, you can. But give it ten minutes."

Ten minutes later, I still wanted to eat. It was 10:45 at night.

But I had brushed my teeth and laid down, and I said, "I can wait until morning. I'm NOT hungry, I'm *stressed* and this is just my body's effort to binge."

And the strangest thing happened... My body LISTENED to me. The hunger went away, and I went to sleep. Again, I know it won't always be this way. There will be days when I cave and consume. But I'm happy with this one small victory. It tells me I CAN change my way of thinking, and years and years of bad habits! WOOT!

Good for you! Over time It will become alot easier to say "no" to those snacking urges. Yesterday I REALLY wanted some potato chips or popcorn for a snack.... but I had already laid out almonds and carrots.... so I resisted the urge and ate those instead. I just keep envisioning myself posting a skinny picture on the success thread... and tell myself... I want that alot more than those potato chips.

    Good luck with your journey!

Yeah You!!! Sleep solves a lot of things in my opinion.....makes you feel bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning AND keeps the late night hungries away :) Nice job.:drinker:

Thank you! I understand what you mean about those potato chips. Sour Cream and Cheddar Ruffles. OH GURL. I could eat a bag without blinking!

Thanks! You are absolutely right about sleep. I may not be getting as much as I should since my son isn't a good sleeper. But when I was fighting post pardum depression last year, the number one rectifying agent was a good NAP. I think people undervalue the significance of sleep to health!

Way to go!! Getting started is the hardest part, so you're well on your way. Next time you feel like stress-eating, or eating something you shouldn't, remember how amazing you felt when you resisted temptation! It's definitely hard to do, so remembering how good you'll feel if you don't cave will help :)

Great NSV!! Those late night cravings call me too! I have found if I just go ahead and lay down for the night, I forget all about them and wake up ready for the new day.

That is great advice! I will have to remember this next time a craving comes (and Lawd's Yes, we know it will!).

I agree! I really think it is the answer for late night cravings. Just tell yourself you get to eat in the morning, and that is half the battle!

that is amazing, breaking a bad habit is part of the big steps are the path to healthy living. You are doing wonderful! So proud of you.
  • That's a big success! Half the battle is negotiating with yourself to not eat when your bored/stress and to stay motivated. If I had a light early dinner, a good yummy snack that i'll have is a sliced apple with a little peanut butter! It also cures that late night sweet tooth that sometimes creeps up!

Thanks so much for the positive feedback! It makes my day. Communal encouragement is proving to be an AMAZING source of energy for me, too. :)

Oh yes, that is a great snack! I've made the switch to almond butter. SO GOOD. Have you tried it?

I do peanut butter when I get that urge too - I feel like it's better to quelch a gurgling stomach with fat & protein than carbs (especially late at night - I have enough trouble falling asleep as it is!). I just have a spoonful of it by itself though :)

That is clever! Do you use regular peanut butter, or reduced fat/sugar??
  • Not yet, but it's on my grocery list!

the spike in insulin ..... that is the culprit.

do some research and read about nutrition. I am not going to blame the carbs in the pizza (oops sorry not sorry) and start another carb/low carb debate....

but I encourage you to read about food choices that will keep you fuller longer. Almonds! for example. Also, be honest about portion sizes. That should help you to another NSV, Great job on the 11 pound loss.
