Since I first started out lifting weights over 10 years ago, I've made a lot of dieting and training mistakes and wasted a lot of time progressing. I have listed the top 3 lessons I've learnt over the years of training. Hopefully it will help others.
Reply back with any useful tips if you have any to pass on.
1/ 99% of bodybuilding advice out there is aimed at bodybuilders who take steroids - I spent years following the advice and reading articles on how to train from bodybuilders who use steroids (this is the mass majority of competitive bodybuilders btw). If you are natural then this information is useless. Steroids allow you to train more and recover quicker. Natural bodybuilders need more time to recover and cannot train with the same intensity for such a long period as a steroid user.
2/ Protein shakes aren't the holy grail of building muscle - Too many beginners think that there is some special ingredient in protein shakes that will make their muscles explode in size. Unfortunately that ain't true. If you are able to consume adequate amount of protein through your meals, then protein shakes aren't required. Get your diet in check before you even think about purchasing any supplements, otherwise you're just wasting your money
3/ Leave your ego at the door - Lift heavy, but do it Safe! I spent my early years jumping on the bench press with out a warm up and trying to lift super heavy with piss poor form. I now have shoulders that click and pop whenever I move arms above my head. Make sure you have a good warmup before you lift heavy and lift with good controlled form. If you are unable to slowly control the weight, then it is too heavy
