How fast can you run a mile?

Fastest Outside - 7.15 But I felt so 'on it' that morning..
Happy rate? in the 9's normally over 4miles + (or 26min 5km on 'good' days so in the late 8's)
Long distance rate? (over 7-11 miles) in the 10's
Occasional 8's and 7's pop up but it really depends on the terrain, time of day, distance etc - I can run a 7 on the treadmill no bother but I don't rate that the same as being outside and pushing myself rather than the machine pacing me.
I've been running for around 3 years - I'm not overly competitive as you can tell by my speeds but I run for enjoyment, I run multi tertian or long steady jogs so maybe I'm not the best person for '1 mile' distances as that just seem's unworthy of popping my trainers on however good luck with you aim0 -
I was running at 12 minute pace in January this year and slowly improved to my parkrun last week where my 5k time was 26:56 an average of 8:40 per mile. My normal training pace is around 9:20 my target is to drop to 8 min average for a parkrun0

The OP didn't ask that. Are you trying to minimise everyone's achievements?0 -
"How fast can you run a mile?"
That depends on how many times I'm able to pause the stopwatch.
But you meant all at once, right?0 -
I want to train myself to be a fast runner. So far I can run 1 mile in 15 minutes if I dont stop, and run 1 mile in 13 minutes if I do stop for breaks.
My goal is to do 5-6 minutes a mile. How fast are some of you? How did you train yourself to do this? And how long did it take?
Work on running longer first. The speed will come. Before I injured myself, I was running about a 9 minute mile. I don't really want to get much faster than that. I'm not training for a half--just doing it for exercise! When I ran last weekend, I did my first mile at 10 mins 30 seconds and my second at 13 minutes (walked part of this b/c ankle/leg began hurting).
Anyway if you start slower, then you do better at having a spurt of energy in the middle for longer distances.0 -
6:28 is my fastest mile. I can't hold that pace for multiple miles. My fastest 5K was like 22 minutes. I started 4 years ago with a 14+ minute mile so I'm pretty happy that at 47 I can run a sub 7 minute mile.
I applaud all the accomplishment on here. Way to go people.0 -
If you can focus on distance; speed follows... Distance and time builds endurance. I've been focusing on 5k since march and just started 10k this week. I figure my 5k will get quicker and seem easier when I'm used to running 10k. As for goals, I just want to get better and ...
the only person to beat is me from yesterday!
So I've decided not to care about anyone's times but my own.
This. Strongly!0 -
My fat butt can actually run about a 9-10 min mile (yes, even at 230 pounds!).
My fastest mile time was a little under 7 minutes back in the day.
I ran with people who were faster than me (thanks to military training)...that helped....but when I did'nt have the people around me, I just alternated distance of my runs throughout the week (one long day, two short, one interval, etc)....that seemed to work for me.0 -
Can't run to save my life, but I walk a 14 minute mile. Figure it's better to walk 2 miles daily at that pace than try to run with my bad feet and hurt things, leaving me out of commission for weeks.0

I just ran a mile in 9:51. Been running, cycling, and strength training for the past 14 months though. Only thing holding me back from faster times is my current weight.0
-
I went to Barry's Bootcamp the other day, and we had to see how far we could get in 7 minutes running on the treadmil. I go to 0.76. One guy ran a mile in just under 5 minutes!!!!
On average I'd say I do 10 minute miles.0 -
A little over 6 minutes, but I haven't timed it in a while. I can do that when I'm only running one mile and not when I'm doing longer distances. I pace at around 9-10 minutes a mile for jogs.0
-
I can do a 5 minute KM fairly easily, haven't really tried upping the pace yet though0
-
Update, 6:50 is the time I have so far!0
-
I run between a 10.5 and 11 minute mile. I've been running for years and I think the best I got was a ten minute mile, or perhaps it was a 9.5 minute mile.0

8 minutes 10 seconds so far. Going for 7! It's taken me a year and a half.0
-
9:07 - down from 11:45 in June.0

somewhere between 9:30 and 10 min depends on the day and how i am feeling the fastest i have done a mile is a bit over 9 mins
been running since april still trying to build endurance
i am not a fast runner but i am running that is all that matters0 -
5:58 best time thus far, although I've been training so hard lately, I know I can destroy that time. Get after it folks!0

That's actually a good question. I never do any distance less than 5K. I should probably try an all out sprint at the local high school track and see what i can pull.0
-
I just PR'd my mile at 6:18, and this came solely due to putting 650 slow, easy miles under my belt. Next year, I'll have twice as many, and I'll break 6. Be patient - it's a long term process.0

Not a good runner at all, but my last trek at it was just at 9 minutes. Slow as hell compared to many. But I'm a fast kicker!

When I started 6 months ago I could barely finish a mile in like 16 mins... Right now I'm at about 10:30 a mile, but i'm not all outting it because my goals arent just a single mile. I want to be about to do a 5k without stopping. I can manitain about 10.50 not-stop for 2.5-3miles... Eventually my goal would be 10 minute miles or less... I'll get there, its just going to take time :-)0

1 mile, top speed? 7:30/mile
5k Speed - 7:50/mile
10k Speed - 8:30/mile
Half Marathon Speed - 9:00/mile
I found that stair running, squats and Plyo exercises (jumping, explosive leg movements) helped with my overall speed greatly.0 -
PS: When I first started running, at 310 pounds... I couldn't. I would lumber up and down the block and hurt my back... I had to lose 50 pounds before I started running.0

A 5-6 minute mile is FAST.
My 1 mile PR is 7:11, and that is tough for me. I hope to do a sub-7 someday, but that's as far as my dreams go.
I love distance running and trail running because it's not as much about speed as it is about endurance!0 -

You totally should! With your long run pace, I bet you would be able to do a crazy fast mile!0 -
When I started weight training back at the end of June, I was timed for a mile at 10:37
End of July - 9:16
End of August - 8:45
End of September - 8:22
We'll see what happens at the end of this month. I mainly did weight training with plyometrics and sprint intervals mixed in. It would be amazing to be under 8 minutes as I have NEVER done that in my entire life!
Previously, I trained for marathons and have run 3 (Honolulu 1997, Walt Disney World 1999; Austin Motorola 2001) But I was never fast at any of those. My PR for a marathon was 5:32:33 at Austin Motorola. My typical run/race at that time was 5k distance at about an 8:57 pace. I am looking to see what I could do in a 5k now, so I have signed up for a race next month.0
