The protein powder itself is not the problem. People with muscle dysmorphia tend to take a lot of it, but using it is not a problem per se.

I don't know what they said at the conference, but the thinking on this is that it's a kind of Body Dymorphic Disorder. When it's listed on the paperwork, it says, "Body Dymorphic Disorder, Muscle Dysmorphia." Like the anorexics, there is an issue of control. Instead of starving, though, they're bulking. They use powders and supplements to do it because they believe those things will make their muscles bigger and Bigger Muscles is where everything begins and ends. They tend to not eat very healthy foods, so their bodies aren't properly nourished. But they don't really care if they're healthy. They only care if they're muscular.

Control is a huge thing with all of these things. It's a bigger issue than most textbooks (or experts) will say. That's turning, though. We already see less of that ridiculously stupid picture of the skinny girl who sees a fat one in the mirror. The issue of control is being addressed more often.

Anorexics and muscle dysmorphics aren't "mirror delusional." They see themselves in the mirror. They just don't like what they see and think they could be a little skinnier or a little bigger...and that doesn't end. No amount of losing or bulking will make them happy.

Just as every woman who diets isn't anorexic, every man who lifts is not a muscle dysmorphic.

It's not the protein powder. It's the person.
