The Power of Habit

Has anyone read this book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg? How successful were you at changing a habit? What did you do to chanege that habit? I just finished reading this book and I am intrigued by some of his insights. I plan to use some of his ideas to help me create a better bedtime rountine. RIght now my sleep habits are not helping me in my quest to keep me weight off. My first plan is to work towards a set time get to bed and to wake up. I also want to work on my addiction to ice cream. I am going to figure out my cue this week. Where I eat it? The time. What is my emotional state? Who is around? What was I doing just prior to getting out that ice cream scoop. As a separate issue what happens when I do not have it in the house?

On Fridays I am going to post my progress on changing my habits. Two of the last three nights getting to bed at the same time. Didn't sleep well last night because of a bad storm. By looking at when and why I eat ice cream. It is a treat I look forward to for dessert. I rarely have it as a snack. I am going to try to have it every other day and see if that helps.

Sounds like a book I might want to take a look at.... I know once you get in a habit ...it's set....the trouble is most of us (OK me)...the habits are the bad ones.....

Thanks for the info on the book....

Sleeping is going better because I am taking a walk after dinner. I think it helps settle me and I am watching less T.V. at night. Ice cream is a bigger challenge. I am trying to substitute yogart instead. It is hard for me to eat unsweetened so I mix 50% plain with 50% vanilla and sometimes add my own unsweetened fruit. Pam you are correct ingrained bad habits are hard to change. Like the book suggusts I am trying to establish new habits that replace the old. Always a process.
