Avoiding food will not help you gain weight, but there is some evidence that fasting is good for your health in general.0

There is an IF group on here. Can't link, I'm on mobile but they'll have a ton of useful info in there.0

what?
Do IF if it works for you. I personally don't like being hungry at night- I found myself sliding unknowningly into an IF style of eating without even knowing that's what it was called- I just didn't eat breakfast and started eating around 12-1 in the afternoon.
When you're bulking- the issue becomes how much volume of food can you fit in to your face in a shorter time frame without making yourself sick- that's really only the down side. If you reduce that window to like 4 hours- eating 3000+ calories in 4 hrs- daily- is a *kitten*.
Most people spread it out for practical purposes.
But you're free to eat all your calories in one meal if it works for you.0 -

Yes, the key to a good bulk is clean eating with a slight surplus coupled with hard, smart training.
The IF model has value when trying to either add more muscle with less fat...or cut weight and retain muscle while reducing body fat. As for insulin sensitivity, who knows?
I have experienced mild results with both.
They come slowly, so IF is no fast acting miracle. I suggest people read up and just try it different ways. See for yourself.
I got results, but I know others who said it did nothing.
Good Luck!0 -

I'm going to say, no. I'm not a dietician or doctor, but that sounds a bit brosciency to me. Somebody else who has more knowledge may be able to answer that in a more technical way.
If that was true then I think we would know for sure. File it under broscience.

How did IF become a night-eating/breakfast skipping concept? I normally eat from around 9am-5pm...technically IF (it just works with my schedule). Who says someone doing IF is saving up for night time eating? I don't care what time any one eats, but this always confuses me how you only hear of IF'ers waiting until later in the day.0 -

From what I read in MFP forums it is because when some people eat breakfast too early then they have a problem staying within their daily calorie limit.

Interesting...I guess I can relate. On Sundays I'm up early with the kids and try to get them out of the house for breakfast to let my husband sleep in (he does the same for me on Saturdays), so I end up eating early on Sundays and it does make it a little harder the rest of the day. But I've found most days if I wait until 8 or 9am, it's no problem for me to finish eating around 5, maybe 5:30pm and feel full for the night. Different strokes.0 -

Not for another hopefully at max 20 pounds more to cut.0 -
I did IF for about a year. It really didn't make a difference with respect to body composition during that time period. Surprisingly energy levels were the same when I worked out in fasted state.
What I learned from it, was the convenience aspect of it. I didn't have to prep meals all the time and just had two larger meals during my 16 hr feeding window. I still in a way am doing fasting, but it's from 7pm - 7am, and that's because my body has habitually adjusted to finish up eating around 7i'sh time slot.
Other than the convenience factor, I didn't really feel there were any other benefits to it.0 -

You can IF how ever you want- and whatever works for you- there is no exact answer- some people like 16/8- some people like 20/4- I personally don't have set windows- I just push off my food as long as I can Monday- Friday.
Weekends- I find myself having an early breakfast (like 7-8) then I have dance from 9 to like 1 or 2- sometimes I don't eat till 4-5 PM if we have workshops. I may have a snack- but one tiny yogurt on top of 1 small bowl of oats really doesn't count as "food"
It's more heard of because it's more common for people to do it that way- but it's not all about night eating- do whatever works for you- its' not some weird club rule. that's why IF works.0 -

just popping in- I tried that "big breakfast, medium lunch, light dinner" thing for way too long. I know it is supposed to be awesome, but unfortunately I just end up hungry and depressed at the end of the day.
Basically in the morning I eat a 200 calorie token something or other along with my coffee, so that I dont get a stomachache from the coffee.0 -
I found the following article in the National Center for Biotechnology Information. It's a government website and the article is super long. It has a section in nutrition timing. My take away is that unless you are a super elite athlete timing doesn't make a difference. Happy reading...

I have 2 small preztles around 10 because my stomach goes on strike and threatens to up-heave violently some days- otherwise I drink coffee from 7 AM to about 1230 and I'm good. light dinner just makes for an awful day- and a big breakfast slows me down... a lot.
Skipping breakfast is the best thing EVER. LMAO0 -

Ditto!
I do coffee for breakfast, a 210 calorie protein bar for lunch and the rest of my calories are at dinner and some ice cream before bed.
Makes it so much easier than thinking about what to eat and apportioning calories, how much do I have left now, what can I have so I don't go over... It's hard to overeat when you have so many calories left for dinner so I can basically have whatever I want and still have calories for dessert or a protein shake.

Giolis, I can imagine have a full day's calories to play with at one meal. Basically I'd be eating fettuccine alfredo till I burst. LOL, which is why I am not in the "gaining" part of the forum usually.0

Great idea for dinner! Thanks!0 -
Been doing IF almost 2.5 months. Broke through my plateau. I do 16/8. Can definitely see stubborn belly fat going away. I feel better when I don't eat breakfast. Eating breakfast had me hungrier within an hour. Not eating it, I break my fast at 1pm and it's fine. No hunger.0
