I got a bike!

I'm so excited.
Last week, I took a free course offered in my city on how to ride a bike, and in less than two hours, I was up and riding for the first time (though I've got a long way to go in terms of skills and steering and maintaining balance for a long time). Last night, I went and bought a second-hand bike from a rental shop that was selling off last year's models. $95 for a Fuji Crosstown 2.1, which is a comfort/hybrid. It seems to be sound, though not pretty (scratched and chipped). I'm OK with that, since it will make it less appealing for people to steal, and I suppose if it's a keeper after I've learned how to ride on it, I can always get it painted.
I spent a good half hour last night wiping the bike down and getting it clean. I felt like a new car owner.
Today, I'm going to get a helmet and a new bell. And soon, I expect I will be hauling that thing over to the park to find some wide open spaces to learn on. (And I'll repeat that class with my own bike on Sunday.)

Congratulations, you are in for some real fun; nothing quite like a bike for getting you out in the fresh air and exercising. Get the teacher at the class to help you set the bike up for you or go onto YouTube for the GCN video on how to do it for yourself. It really does make a difference0

Congratulations! Bikes are so much fun! When you're ready to ride in traffic (and even before then), check out John S. Allen's booklet on Bicycling Street Smarts, available in a free online edition at: http://bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/usa/index.htm0

Glad you found something that is fun and gives you exercise at the same time.
I try to ride 2 or 3 times a week, and in reading your post I am inspired to take my bike to the park today and try for a 10 mile ride.
I also went and got a kayak. They are great fun too.0
