Makes 1 serving

qxucd1.jpg

1 medium banana
1 tablespoon chocolate chips, crushed nuts, and/or peanut butter (optional)
whipped cream (optional)

Cut a ripened banana into thick "coins" and place in a freezer safe bag, then into the freezer overnight. Remove from freezer the following day and blend in a food processor. Scoop into a bowl and place back into the freezer for about 2 hours. Remove from freezer and add toppings (if desired).

Calories without toppings - 105
Calories with chocolate chips - 175
Calories with crushed nuts - 255
Calories with peanut butter - 199

Tastes just like banana flavored ice cream and has the same texture too!

I mix chocolate PB2 into mine. It's ridiculously tasty, and 24 g adds 90 calories and 8g of protein.

At this calorie point, why not just eat ice cream? =/

Unless it's a "vegan" option. In that case, it'd be better bang for your calorie buck to add strawberries, mango, blueberries, etc. and blend them in....

Genuinely curious why someone would go through the trouble though.

Different reasons. Some people just like to eat more nutritious or like to try new things or have trouble finding out what to do with their almost overripe bananas, etc. I personally think it tastes better than regular ice cream (and I'm getting lots of potassium and other nutrients at the same time, along with not letting my bananas go to waste).

My kid has been eating it since she was 2 - she's almost 8 now and it's still her favorite over any real ice cream.

    Vegans like chocolate too :)

If it were only a calorie thing, I'd probably make celery ice cream with kale blended in. I'd save on the water, too, because I could just use my tears

My mother got the Yonana machine for me and my kids. They like it but it does not do it for my sweet tooth. It always tastes like banana. I do full better giving it to the kids though.

I like this use for overripe bananas. Wish it wasn't called banana "ice cream " though because I'm not a fan of things being called something they aren't. It raises expectations, leads to dissapoointment and now even seems to be in the way of someone finding a real recipe for actual ice cream. Bummer.

    Here you go @Alatariel75

This recipe has real cream and sweeteners and comes from Alton brown who is good at fine tuning recipes.

Oh I found my recipe for it too. If the above Alton brown recipe seems to tricky, try mine. Its way easier.

I do it as an alternative to a protein bar - use about 99 g banana, a little Greek yogurt because I have to do it in my blender that doesn't work so well, and some protein powder. It comes out to around 192 cal, which is comparable to a normal protein bar with the same amount of protein. Add a little cinnamon and toasted unsweetened coconut flake... yum!
