10,000 steps?!

Who are these people that can reach 10k steps in one day? I live in Texas and its 100+ lately. My desk job doesn't allow me to walk around much. I'm not sure where I can rack up more steps :/

Ps, I'm using my iPhone to track them and I don't always have it on me (in fact, i seldom do) so I just ordered the clip on jawbone tracker. Maybe that'll change my outlook.

    I am. I run between 3 and 5 miles a day and I walk a lot.

    I hit 10k on most days. I live in Louisiana so I understand the heat struggle! I'm doing C25K and I'm in week 7. I can usually hit about 5k by the end of my run, then just make up the rest throughout the day. I run at about 6 am before it gets insanely hot, then occasionally go walking around 6pm with friends when it starts to cool down - with a bottle of water or 2! My Fitbit made a big difference in my activity level. Good luck!

    Are you able to get up at all from your desk? I try to do little walk breaks every hour or so. I'm on the third floor so I'll usually walk up and down the stairs which adds up! :) If I can't leave my office, I'll sometimes pace back and forth a bit or take a quick walk down the hallway. I'm in New Mexico so I definitely understand the issues with the heat. At least we don't have the humidity here though!

    I consistently hit at least 10K a day - my average is just over 12K a day.

    I run at least 3 miles 6 days per week. I take a walk during my lunch break - about 1.5 miles. If I'm not at work (I only work 3 days a week), I am very busy taking care of 3 kids, running errands, grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, cleaning... I rack up a lot of steps that way.

    I can, but it often requires me to resort to walking circles around my apartment (living room to kitchen to dining room to living room). I'm a stay at home mom and if I had a treadmill at home I'd just use that. On cardio days, I typically leave the gym with 6-8k steps. On lifting days, I leave the gym with 3-5k steps. I will even walk for groceries (providing I don't need many), a craving (like a candy bar), or when I just need a few things from the store (like diapers).

    I live in Houston. I've done 13,416 so far today. I walked my dog early this morning and will again when the sun goes down. During the work week I can usually manage 5000-7000 before I leave work (desk job). It's mostly little stuff that adds up. Take a longer route to the restroom, pace while your lunch is in the microwave, walk the parking garage at lunch. I get 600+ steps and two flights of stairs just by going out to my car to grab something.

    Ok, I didn't realize intentional exercise counted towards the 10k. That changes things. Thanks for your input everyone!

    OK...Do you get a lunch break? - Use it to go for a walk. Do you get a coffee break? Go get a coffee at the coffee shop or just go for a walk... Go for a walk before work/ after work... No idea how you can get only 100+ - I usually get that much just getting up, going the the bathroom, getting dressed and making coffee.....
    Today was a very lazy rest day - I took the dog out for a short walk to the end of the block, dropped something off at my daughter's apartment (driving there) and went to the grocery store - other than that I was just puttering around the house, and I am on 6000 steps for the day...No workout, as it is a rest day....
    Planning on going for a longer walk tonight when it is cooler

    Is it that hot at all hours of the day? Reason I ask is, perhaps you can get out for a walk in the evening once the sun goes down if it's cooler at that time.

    Texas here too...I understand. It has been like this for several weeks and we still have a ways to go.

    If I can get out the door by 6:30am I can get in a little time...before the sun comes up over the tree line. At night after about 8:00pm it is better. However...I live where the is a lot of asphalt and concrete so when it is 100 degrees air temperature...it feels more like 110+ degrees...then there is the traffic zooming by...feels even hotter!

    Walk inside is my best advice...put on some music...dance...march...etc

    We have a bunch of people at work that if it's smoking hot outside will walk the floors. They start in the basement corridors, then the main level, then the second floor. Some will do that a couple times a day, not only as a form of exercise but just a mental health break to clear their mind.

    I do 10,000 steps a day, but I live in New England where it's mild. On very hot days I try to walk either early in the morning or in the evening before dark. I also occasionally do step-based aerobics such as kickboxing or zumba, which really racks up the steps. If it's really hot, I use the treadmill at the gym, but find it boring.

    I live in upstate NY where we don't have the heat issue, but I can't reach my 10k steps unless I do something "extra". I have a desk job too, mostly. Before or after work if I go on a walk or a class in the gym I usually hit the 10k. It's really not that hard if you count *everything* from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep...it really adds up! You'll probably see a big difference on your jawbone :smile:

    I average about 13000-15000 steps a day... I am teacher and on my feet all day long. It's harder to get my steps during the summer and on the weekends during the school year, so I hike at the local nature park to get my steps in.

    I live in Georgia and it can get really hot here too; though not as bad as Texas. I just walk early in the morning before it gets too hot and bring lots of water and I can usually last about two hours and get in all the steps I need to. I also work out in my apartment (currently doing Insanity Max) and the steps add up as there is a lot of jumping and running in place and such.

    Just wanted to point out that the "100+" is referring to the temperature outside, not her overall step count.

    It counts however you want it to count. During the work week, I try to hit my 10,000 before exercise. I have to use the printer down the hall, have a standing desk and my fitness tracker nudges me if I've been inactive for 45 minutes. Then I take a little walk. I work on a college campus and have meetings all over creation. I walk the long way around most of the time.

    Then I exercise. :smiley:

    At work I can log 10K easily by the time I punch out but I work in a shop. A busy day can put me at 12-14k.

    But on my off days even with chores and purposeful exercise I struggle to beat 8k. Today for example, I worked around the house and did some things for my wife I hit the gym for my 5x5 and played around with the foam roller then just now I ran 2.25 miles as part of my secondary program and I'm just over 8500 steps.

    Ofcourse I feel more physically spent than I do after 12,000 steps at work.
