Before/After workout foods

What are the best things to eat/drink before or after a workout. I know you don't want to eat much before because then that's all you will burn but if you go first thing in the morning should you eat something to get your blood sugar up? Also what is good for after a workout?

    pre workout i always have rice cakes good carb choice for me. and post workout i usally have a meal like 5 oz of chicken and cup of rice.

    I was recommended by a bodybuilder friend to eat a banana before my workout and a protein shake immediately after. I do moderate/heavy cardio for 30 mins and 10-20 mins of weightlifting 5x per week.

    Depends on your goals. As a general rule, I've heard you don't really need food to feed a cardio workout of under an hour. I work out fasted during the weekends all the time with no ill effects. I generally have my regular meals after my workouts.

    But there are some specifics people might give you, just don't feel like you have to eat before if you don't want to. If you are going to run 20 miles, though, the rules might change.
