Hey everyone,

I had a baby 5 weeks ago via c section and have the green light from my doctor to start exercising again. I started my piyo dvds again which I was doing for the majority of my pregnancy. I plan to do hiit cardio 2-3 times a week using a sprint/ walk and would like to start lifting weightsin 3-4 months . My question is what supplements are good for nursing moms? I've heard good things about celucor from people I follow and was interested, but I don't know where to begin. Ay help would be great.

    1) Take it easy. Start slowly, and ease gradually to more intense workouts. Your body is still healing, and reopening the c-section scar is not something you want to experience (been there, done that).
    2) No supplements, drugs or whatever out of the ordinary unless your pediatrician tells you it is safe. If the question is whether you need something, the answer is probably not, other than what your dr has recommended. If the question is are other supplements going to hurt the baby, this depends on baby, dosage and age, so always ask your pediatrician first. Things that are totally innocent for an adult or older child, might not be safe for a young baby.

Why do you want to take supplements? Supplements, in general, are not required for losing weight or getting in shape.

I was looking for a good protein or energy supplement to help with the workout, not necessarily for weight loss.

I would try getting protein from real foods first--eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. Even look at the protein content in your bread or granola bars. If you're still short on protein, a protein drink (powder mix) is fine. But I would first try to increase protein from real food.

As for an energy supplement, I've never taken any so I can't advise on it. I would be hesitant to take one while nursing. A moderate amount of coffee generally won't make a baby fussy but the caffeine level in an energy drink may be problematic.

Personally, preworkout supplements make me flush and feel prickly. I don't think I would recommend it while nursing.

As a user above says, try to get protein from real sources first. I find it more satiating to spend 160 calories on food than on protein powder (although I do put it in my coffee because of my current fitness goals). If you spent that amount of calories on chicken breast, you would probably get more protein too.

Thanks for all the feedback! I guess I should wait until after I am finished nursing to research supplements.

I used nursing time tea and another product which I cant mention. I was a poor pump responder, but at one point I could express 5oz while at work. That was huge for me. Also, a good dark beer seemed to work in my case I could only drink half. I also nursed as much as possible which is going to be the biggest influence on your supply. We had a rough start and I didn't think we would ever be successful, but its more than a year and a half later and it's still going strong. Of course now it's mainly comfort and at night.
