Hey all,
Looking for exercise ideas that I can do while recovering from back/ankle/knee injuries – Cannot lift/squat b/c of sciatic nerve/herniated disc issue – Running/Walking for extended periods of time swells up the ankle – I am currently in Physical Therapy for these issues but could use some ideas to help burn some calories. When it rains it pours… I can only improve from here (hopefully –
*Also swimming isn’t really an option b/c our local pool is always packed and isn’t really lap swimmer friendly after work.

Speak with your doctor. Why not ask your physical therapist????0

Yes, ask your PT!
I'd be looking around for other pool options, too--YMCA, local high school with public hours, sometimes hospitals have a health center whose pool runs a bunch of aquaerobics/aquacize classes for rehab patients.0 -
Can you do Yoga, or pilates? Yoga would be the way to go conservatively. Pilates adds a little weight so it might or might not aggravate a nerve/disc issue. Take classes so that your form can be corrected by the moderator or just do beginner online stuff. Be careful and take appropriate rests. No use in aggravating your injuries even more than they already are. Can you do non impact work like the elliptical (biking would be in a sitting position which I would think is bad for that sciatic issue)? Just throwing out some ideas. Good luck!0

I have degenerative disc disease and 3 bad discs in my neck and 3 in my low back, with nerve impingement and nerve pain. You might try a recumbent bike if you can't get into some sort of water classes. Water would really be your best bet. Walking, even if only for a few minutes would help too. I was almost bedridden and basically slowly pushed to where I'm at now. Keep the faith, it's possible!!!! I have arthritis in both knees, my lower back, ankles, fibromyalgia, etc etc. I finally pushed for knee surgery and it's no wonder my knee was in so much pain!!! I can finally walk a half mile without dying, I can do the cyber arc, similar to the elliptical but less impact, do light weights on machines and use a stability ball for core exercises. Talk to your physical therapist and see what they recommend. Good luck! The biggest thing is learning the difference between injury pain and sore pain to push thru.0
