need a little help with sorting a menu with low sodium. Had a heart attack friday morning and now have to completely change my diet. Dr said I also need to watch my sugar intake because it was slightly elevated when I came into the hospital but not to the level of being diabetic. Any suggestions will help.

Those are good ideas but need more to create a menu. Want to try to keep sodium around 1600 to 1800 mg per day if possible right now which would be a reduction of 500 to 700 mg per day.

How about things like eggs and veggies in some capacity (quiche, egg bakes, scrambled eggs, egg muffins), homemade soups, chili, casserole, stew, pasta dishes, meat & veg, stir fry, burgers, meatloaf, rice dishes, potatoes, so on.

Most prepared/canned/frozen/boxed items and prepared meats (sausages, deli meats) are higher in sodium, but if you make meals yourself they aren't because you control the salt you're adding to your dish.

Really, what do you like to eat, and how are you prepared to cook it yourself?

Do you have access to a dietician as part of your healthcare team? Chicken breast, fish, sweet or regular potatoes, home cooked lentils, vegetables, fruit, steamed rice. Avoid salad dressings, processed foods, and BBQ sauces. Bake, broil, grill, boil, or steam foods instead of frying. Don't drink alcohol. (you probably already know this)

Best of luck in your recovery from this terrible event :s

Lol I'm big on chicken and turkey. Love sa!mom but can't stand talapia mainly because of the news about the fecal matter being found in the packaged fish coming from overseas where most of it comes from. The dietician actually came into my room while I was down having test done and just left a piece of paper with information on the dash diet but never returned to go over it so I'm left too figuring it out for myself.

You should consider looking into the following programs/books:
    1. Dr. Dean Ornish - The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health
    2. Caldwell Esselstyn - Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure
    3. Colin Campbell and Thomas Campbell - The Campbell Plan: The Simple Way to Lose Weight and Reverse Illness, Using The China Study's Whole-Food, Plant-Based Diet and The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health

Each of these books discuss the science, research, and nutrition for sustaining a heart healthy lifestyle. Each of them provide their own slant on approach, so it may be good to review each of them to find the one that will best suit your life. These plants will naturally be low fat, low sodium and heart healthy!
