I cooked for two and weighed out 250g of cooked rice for myself. MFP only shows 270 cals for 75g uncooked. So how many calories was in my portion?

It says she weighed out the rice, so I think the scale is not the issue.

Search the database for Rice white cooked (or brown, whatever you've got there), and it should come up. And the drop down menu will give you log options for grams, etc.

there should be an option for "rice-cooked" or "rice-steamed" or something along those lines.

I scanned the barcode on my rice packet and used that. It says cooked but when I enter 250g it says that's 900 calories.

    It's probably around 400 calories.

Rice packages give you the calories for DRY rice. So you have to weigh it dry for it to be accurate. Make 2 servings (or 4)... Then you can weigh it cooked and divide by 2 (or 4) to get your two servings worth.

The 'rice cooked' entries were off when I used them. For example, I made rice the other day, and 100g is 160 calories... but MFP says 100g of cooked rice is 130 calories.

So you're really better off weighing it dry first. It will always depend on how long it was cooked, how much water was absorbed etc.

    • I'm going to say that cooked rice weighs 240% of uncooked.
    • 75g uncooked then becomes 180g cooked.
    • 250 is 139% of 180
    • Your calories are 139% of 270 which is 375
That's the best I can do with my third-grade education.

    From http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-rice-long-grain-white-rice-cooked-without-salt_f-ZmlkPTY0NjMw.html

    I find 5.6oz = 205 calories.
    Convert your 250g to oz... 250g * .035oz/g = 8.75oz

    Some more math.... (8.75oz / 5.6oz)*205cal/oz = 320ish calories.

Someone feel free to check my math.

Steve, Your numbers are all based on your linked sites calories for cooked rice.

The original question, I think, is mostly about converting uncooked weight to cooked weight. That depends on how much water gets absorbed and then remains in the rice, and that depends on the cook.

So that's why it's better to calculate calories from the uncooked or dry weight.

yes, I understand the problem but it doesn't matter whether you start with dry or an estimate of calories of cooked rice. Either way, you have to make some assumption to get from dry to cooked. I chose to start with calories in cooked rice because the OP had a known amount of cooked rice. I included the link to cooked rice estimate to show where I got it from so as to provide context of where I took my base assumption. Your solution was fine as well, but also based on assumptions (your first bullet). Poe-tay-toes. Poe-tah-toes.
