Hello I am runner (again lol) I was always active when I was younger and recently started running again thanks to my honey who bought me a treadmill to run at home because there is no way I could run anywhere else with 3 kids hahaha...anyhoo I was wondering if anyone possibly had an accurate graph or knows where to find one showing the benefits running with the treadmill inclined vs a flat surface...??

Persistent uphill running (or treadmill incline) places extra strain on your soleus (one of the calf muscles), glutes, hamstrings, and Achilles tendon. This can make them stronger, but leaves them at higher risk of injury. Also, if all you do is uphill incline on the treadmill, your quads are not going to be happy when you get outside and have to run downhill.
For the same speed, running uphill does burn more calories per mile. However, most people have to slow down to go uphill, so it's a tradeoff as far as time goes. (I mean, you burn X kcal per mile running, but you'd get done sooner if you're going faster, so you might have more time to get in extra miles.)0 -

I am a runner with busted tibias. They heal, they stress fracture...it's a vicious cycle. I do no incline running on the treadmill due to the stress it puts on everything. I'm getting a 2nd opinion next week on my tibias and why they keep fracturing. I haven't been able to run since Monday night when I jacked up my left leg jogging. grrrrr.0

Love running! Before my bed rest two years ago when pregnant with my son I used to run marathons and ultramarathons. The training is brutal but there's no high like it. I highly recommend only running on a flat surface specially on a treadmill just because it will stress your knees before you really get in to running on a regular basis. Especially if you haven't ran in a long time the soft tissue is still tender and has to get used to your activity level0
