Smoked Fish - Namely Salmon and Trout

Is this bad for you? I eat it as a tasty snack and love it, but my coworker said it wasn't good for me. I thought it was a good option for a snack as it was fish and I eat it with a little goat cheese on toast (although I'm cutting out the toast shortly and will find something else to eat with it.)

Any advice appreciated! If it's not too too bad, I might keep it as I like it. However, if it is, I'll bite the bullet and say goodbye!

Sodium may be an issue, but if you are not on a sodium reduced diet, no worries! It's an excellent choice, just more salty than un-smoked fish.

I eat smoked salmon as a snack (usually 1 oz). I tried first with small toast but now I have it with microwaved small potatoes ( creamy potatoes, cocktail potatoes), around 100 grams of potatoes for 1 oz of smoked salmon.

I love it too - well, the salmon. Haven't tried smoked trout.

If you can smoke it yourself, you don't need to add salt, but you still get that awesome smoked flavor. We smoke salmon, shrimp and, of course, all kinds of meat and poultry.

I eat a lot of smoked salmon. It's great as a snack! It's got good protein and fat percentages so it keeps me full until dinner.

I love it and don't see why it would be bad for me. I am not concerned about sodium, though, and generally don't get a whole lot from other sources (well, except that I happily use salt in cooking).

Yeah I actually don't eat a lot of salt either so I might be okay, however I'd love to learn how to smoke fish!

If the toast fits, don't cut back on it. It sounds like a really yummy snack. No worries with smoked meat/fish that I know of.

My dad smokes fish, but it's not practical for me. He sometimes sends me some. (I don't know his process, though.)

I love smoked fish. Really, I love any kind of fish. Sodium could be a problem of you eat a lot of ot and have high blood pressure, but other than that, there shouldn't be any problems so long as you're buying a quality brand. Cheaper ones could have sodium nitrite, which has been suspected to raise your chances of cancer if consumed to excess, but many higher-quality ones are free of it, so as long as you're not eating the cheap stuff, you should be alright.

What did your co-worker say made it a bad choice? Salt, fat levels, sustainability of the source?

Smoked salmon is one of my favorite foods (both hot and cold smoked), but, like everything, moderation is key.

Smoked foods contain polyaromatic hydrocarbons like benzo(a)pyrene and also nitrites and nitrates that may have been linked to higher risk of cancer.

Oh good to know! I will moderate it then!
