Looking for scientific studies on calorie counting

I may be about to get into an argument with someone over whether what you're eating matters more than how many calories you're eating. I'm arguing that only amount of calories matter, he's arguing that you have to avoid carbs, starch and sugar as they make you store fat. I'm trying to compile a list of studies that show that, for weight loss, amount of calories is all that matters (or studies that show otherwise, I'd be interested to see them), wondering if anyone here could link to any I could add to my list.
Also probably a good idea to make a list here to refer to next time it comes up in the forums, I couldn't find any other threads on the subject.

Boy are you in luck. This is an article all about what you need to know. At the bottom there are 148 citations to peer reviewed scientific studies.
