Adding Muscle excercise to my daily running plan?

I brisk walk for 45 minutes in the morning and in the evening at a speed of 3.8-4.0 mph. I also want to add daily muscle exercises for boosting metabolism, and I'm somewhat clueless in muscle workouts.. Some exercises that I'm thinking of doing are squats and sit-ups, but I then also wonder if it's meaningful to do just two of them everyday.
