I feel that you need a heart monitor to see calories burned

The typical suggestion around here is to eat back half of your exercise calories. This is because most trackers that do not have a heart rate monitor over-estimate calorie burn. Leaving half uneaten allows for that margin of error.

Personally, I don't usually eat back my exercise calories, at all. But it's nice to know they're there if I'm randomly feeling weak or super hungry.

An HRM is not going to give an accurate reading in terms of measuring all-day activity.

It'll be a case of trial and error. A good start point is to eat back 1/2 the extra calories. If you're losing too fast or you're struggling with hunger then eat a bit more. Losing too slow then eat a bit less.
