Color me rad vs. Spartan Run

Ok. I have a ways to go to get fit but I am considering signing up for a race to prompt me to get in shape. The Color Me Rad race is in Indiana in September 2013 and Spartan Run is May 2014. The CMR is 3 miles and the Spartan is 4 miles. I am considering signing up for the one in September but that might be too close. Also, going to start the C25K to prepare... Any advice on training or any input from anyone who has run these is appreciated...
