Any tips on how to get started with running? I would also like to know about a good app that tracks your pace and distance. I am doing a 5K in October and would like to work my way up to a 12 minute mile.

For a beginner the couch to 5 k app is really good, there's a few free ones, but some of them only cover a few weeks until you have to buy the full app, but they're not expensive and sooo worth it - Or try Runkeeper if you're more experienced, but you need to measure your stance/step to get an accurate reading. Get an armstrap for the phone and it will play your music as you run, if you want, good luck x

I took a learn to run class from the local Running Room location and it was so worth it. Gradually increase your pace using intervals of running and walking starting first week one minute walk to one minute run. Run every other day, three times a week, about 15-20 minutes at a time. Walk for about 5-10 minutes to warm up and stretches afterwards to prevent repetitive strain injury.

I use Endomondo but I hear good things about MapMyRun too.

    Couch to 5K is popular.

If you don't have good running shoes, get thee to a running store and get fitted.

Strava for your phone is very popular among runners and has a huge community. Beware: phones don't like getting sweaty - I killed one screen carrying it in a SPI Belt.

There's a sticky in this forum on running - have a look. Ask questions.

I am on week 5 of C25K and it is totally free with downloadable podcasts, so you can run inside on a treadmill or outside anywhere.

I started with C25K, then transitioned to Zombies, Run (it's a fun running scenario where you're an integral part of the story-line). Now, I just use MapMyRun - it does distance and pace... and I *think* it will set up a training program for you if you tell it what your goals are, but have never used it that way. Both C25K and MMR are free downloads, though on the MMR app, you can pay for an upgrade to get cooler features. AND MMR will link to MFP, so your calorie burns from exercise are posted to your MFP account (so you can eat back exercise calories - win!).
