They don't spike your glucose so they can be subtracted. Just a thought up for discussion

To calculate net carbs, which is likely a concept in places other than Atkins; this was the first explanation I liked.

    http://www.atkins.com/how-it-works/library/articles/what-are-net-carbs

    What are Net Carbs?

When you follow the Atkins Diet, aka the Atkins Nutrition Approach, you actually count grams of Net Carbs, which represent the total carbohydrate content of the food minus the fiber content and sugar alcohols (if in the product). The Net Carbs number reflects the grams of carbohydrate that significantly impact your blood sugar level and therefore are the only carbs you need to count when you do Atkins. Foods that are low in Net Carbs such as nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits don’t have a significant impact on blood sugar and therefore are less likely to interfere with weight loss.

You can calculate the approximate number of Net Carb grams of a low-carb product yourself by looking at the information provided on a food label:

    Total Carbohydrates
    - Dietary Fiber
    - Sugar alcohol
    = Net carbs

Ugh. Can someone recommend me a special calculator? Sounds good in theory but I can barely handle my low carb

    Carbs have no requirement, number-wise.

Fiber is something you should watch. I've seen suggested ranges as little as 25 grams to as high as 38 grams, or more.

You shouldn't have to subtract one from the other.

nope, because most of my data is non-US and the glycaemic carbohydrates on the label do not include fibre. I would get a few negative numbers if I did what you suggest.

I do, because I was instructed by two of my doctors to do so. He's interested in net carbs, not gross carbs.

    Some diabetics do.
