Currently retrying intermittent fasting & I am drinking bulletproof coffee in the morning made with coffee/Mct/milk but Been reading a lot about it recently and getting a lot of mixed messages
  • Adding milk does this affect the benefits?
  • Is brain octane better than Mct?
  • Daily dose States 15ml (1tbls) per day but I've read gradually work way up to 3 times this amount, which is correct?
  • Is the correct recipe coffee, oil and/or butter?

Thanks for taking the time out to read /reply

I use HWC (heavy whipping cream), butter, and refined coconut oil. Mix to your preference. I generally add about 2 tbsp of HWC, a sliver of butter, and 1-2 tsp of refined coconut oil.

Note I would ask this in the IF sub group on here or the keto/LCD (low carb daily group) on here for better answers.

My answer would depend on what you're trying to achieve, low carb? If so I wouldn't use milk and use HWC instead. If not, then I don't know. The point of BPC, IMO, is to carry on a fasted state much longer. The pure fat content of the BPC doesn't break a fast, adding carbs/proteins will.

    Edit: Fixed wording.

Fats don't initiate an insulin response meaning that you stay in a fasted state longer.

    That's not what fasting means.

Depends on what you're trying to achieve. Of course you have to watch caloric intake since it is a FAST. But most people use BPC as a tool to help them make it through IF. Personally, I stick to water fast only.

I've always read that anything over 50 calories will break your fast... I'd say that bullet proof coffee would send you way higher than this.

Fast = 0 calories. Simples. No excuses.

As to the OP, MCT oil has MCTs other than the 8 carbon versions which are presumably what "brain octane" contains - I would just look at analysis of the fats content of those and indeed coconut oil to see what your getting for your money.

My reason for drinking this is to make it through my fasting period and assist in my weight loss/toning journey.

Thank you for this, aim is low carb so will try HWC and will definitely ask the question in the IF group

just an FYI I recently heard if you add some sort of protein like milk to coffee or tea it cuts on the tooth staining. Not sure how true that is, but I thought it was interesting.

Apparently the ingredients in this brilliantly-named "brain octane" are "coconut oil and/or palm kernel oil". That's literally what the label says. So, it could vary from batch to batch without any legal liability on the part of the maker. It could be 100% coconut, 100% palm oil, or some mix of the two. Basically, its the same thing as MCTs, with a totally cool new and snazzy name, and upgraded price. As if "Bulletproof Coffee" wasn't far enough over the top as it is.

Thanks for that. I expected that "Bulletproof" coffee itself was just a case of paying for the brand so I just use normal coffee, but its good know about the ingredients in Brain Octane. Will stick to MCT

    None of this matters.

You will learn more about nutrition (hopefully), look back at these questions, and realize that nothing you are concerned about here matters in the grand scheme of things.

All questions like this do is add to the mystery and confusion.

The brain octane is just the C-8 fatty acid according to http://ilovebuttercoffee.com/brain-octane-vs-mct-oil/

    a random MCT oil is
    Caproic Acid (C6:0)
    2 g
    Caprylic Acid (C8:0)
    50-65 g
    Capric Acid (C10:0)
    30-45 g
    Lauric Acid (C12:0)
    3 g

"made from" isn't the same as "contains"
