exercising on an injury`

I am looking for a bit of advice. I am currently waiting for an op for a torn ligament in my ankle, so far I have had an MRI and special xray to determine the extent of the damage and have been told to hope for an op date in august after another consultation. In the mean time I was told to strap it up, take pain killers and not do much. Here is the dilemma, i dont drive and have a five mile round trip to do the school run and get to work. I have no one to help out and at the same time I WANT to be exercising. I am aware that the activity is not going to be helping the damage but am taking the view that one it cant be helped and two if its going to be operated on then I may as well use it till then.
any ideas whether there is an exercise that is low impact or any advice over what to do?

swimming is low (no?) impact and can actually help with some injuries
that being said, if you try some low impact activities and feel pain (not tired muscle pain but "bad pain" sharp pain in the ankle etc) then stop. If I can give any advice from my own mistakes it is this: Do not push through the pain of an injury, if the doctor says stay off it for X amount of weeks, then stay off it. Listen to the doctor and listen to your body
I did so much damage to my body when I was younger by training on injuries and pushing through injury pain (don't want to be a wimp....) that for the last 7 years I have been plaugued by injuroes that all trace back to not letting an injury heal properly when I was younger0 -
I wish i could swim but cant get out of the house as I have childcare problems in the evening. The walking alone is painful but has to be done. I guess I will just have to be careful and only do what is neccesary ie the school work run and wait. I am sooo impatient0

lol I totally get the impatience, however, having not been able to do much activity at all over the last 7ish years I learned that I did a lot of damage in my teen years by not waiting a few weeks for an injury to heal
if the walking is unavoidable, make sure you are wrapping it up really well and if you can leave earlier and go slower then maybe see if that eases any of the pain - and ice it and maybe elevate it as much as possible after the walking
(that being said, when you get the go ahead to do activity on an injury it is going to hurt and it's a fine balance learning how much to push through that lol - like I had shoulder surgery a year and a half ago and I have just started swimming again and it hurts because I haven't used my shoulder much since the surgery but I can tell that this is rehabbing an injury pain and not you are doing more damage pain0 -
Hi...sorry for your injury. But had a shoulder injury myself and made sure that I eased up working that area completely until it healed. Best thing if you have to is to walk and take your time. Also I agree with the last post that swimming is excellent for recovery. I understand your impatience....but...remember the more damage you do now, the longer it will take you to get back on track. Be patient and give your body a chance to heal.0
