Does anyone know how long it takes to lose strength and/or muscle volume when taking time away from lifting? I'm sorry I've been over-posting lately but I'm getting bad anxiety and starting to obsess about not being able to lift (shoulder injury) I've worked so hard to get my #s where they are and I have a huge fear ill be sent back to my starting place by not consistently pushing my limits.

You'll start losing strength within a week or two, BUT once you're able to start training again, it won't take you as long to get back to where you were. If it's an injury, there's really not much you can do. Work around it as best you can and let it heal all the way, or you'll just push back the recovery even longer.

Actually de-training takes approximately 3 weeks.

Don't worry about it, focus on getting the shoulder healthy. I have had two separate wrist surgeries take me down for 6-8 weeks a piece and within a few weeks of being back I'm right back to where I was.

2-4 weeks in my experience, when it becomes noticeable.

And you will regain it much faster when you go back to it.

thank you all for replying. I'm glad this won't set me back too far. I doubt ill be out more than a couple weeks but im not going to try until it feels normal again. I just had a mental image of getting back into it and not being able to bench press more than the empty bar lol.

You'll be fine. Muscle memory is a real thing. Unless you take 6 months off you'll recover quickly.

not trying to.be a creeper, but your back/shoulders look amazing! I'm glad it won't set me back too far, ill.just hit it hard when I'm able to. I've never minded pushing myself and I miss feeling unstoppable with a barbell in my hands. I have an awesome bodyweight workout planned for tonight so hopefully I can at least keep the progress I've made on my lower body.

I do Olympic Lifting and I had a wrist injury and I had to take close to 5 months off from Oly Lifting. Once I got back into full time. I was getting decent numbers back within 2-3 weeks. I found my strength came back quite fast, which I think was also due to my muscle mass.

I had a tear in my quad that took me out for a month and it took me back a few steps. I took about 3 weeks to get back to where I was. The real challenge is finding the right weights to start at. I spent the first week redoing a deload week to gauge where I was and the next two weeks to get back to strength.

If you are doing 3x5 or 5x5 you might be able to find your starting point a bit faster. 5/3/1 took a week if you follow the program.
