weight plateau

Hi! Kind of new on here, but have been trying to shape up for about a month. I have lost a total of 8 pounds, but seem to have a plateau. I've been getting around 1000 calories a day, then decided to up it to around 1200. I've been very careful about what I'm eating, sticking to lean turkey, veggies, fruits, legumes, and fat free dairy. I'm not exercising a lot, just about 30 to 60 minutes of walking 2.5 to 3 mph everyday. Which nets me 150 to 200 calories burned. Any ideas how to get past the plateau? It's been a couple days stuck at 146 pounds.

That's not a plateau that's normal. A few weeks at the same weight that's a plateau
  • Apparently my TDEE is 2200

If that's true, then you could be eating a lot more than 1200 calories and still be losing. That said, I agree with the user above, 3 days is not a plateau, being at the same weight for a month is a plateau. Day to day weight fluctuations make it difficult to gauge short term progress. I wouldn't be too concerned right now.

Oh, and I recommend the site below for TDEE estimation. Some of the sites out there wildly overestimate; scooby seems to be one of the better ones.

  • I was a little concerned because the weight was a rapid drop, and then just stopped going down. Hence the reason behind eating more.
  • According to the scoobyworkshop site, my tdee is 2100

If you can eat more, do so! I kind of regret ever jumping on the 1,200 plan, but that being said I've gained a wealth of knowledge on this site, from others, and really doing my research.

^^Agreed. I did the same. I started at 1200 and was starving, upped to 1300 and lost NOTHING, now i'm at 1450 and losing again.

Eat a lot more. You'll feel better.

Here's some good resources on eating more to lose more. You have to feed your body, or else it shuts down. Your body is smart and learns from your patterns. But the kicker is........you can't do it all at once. Raise your intake by 10% over a course of time.

Essentially, you need to make sure you are using the MFP BMR tool so you know what range to play in. Increase your calorie count by 10% for a day or three, and then on an off day, eat a full 2,000 calories. The theory is that your body has adjusted to famine and survive with the restricted calorie count. You have to trick it back to know that it is still being fed so it busts through the plateau. You only do that by feeding it more.

  • I don't think i could eat 2000 calories worth of food. I can probably do 1300 or 1400 without feeling ill.

How about trying to include calorie dense foods like avocados, nuts, and peanut butter? Those foods are nutritious and fill up calories pretty easily.
