sprints or the steady long run?

Hi. I have been loving my nice steady 5 mile run and I dont want to change that. I do want to start HIIT by doing sprints. I have tried doing them while I run my normal run and I cant go as long or as far and I also did my normal run first and tried sprinting afterwards and I was really too exhasted. Should I just do one or the other? Is it suppose to be this tough? Should I just push Myself harder? How long should the intervals be? When I sprint I have been running as fast as I can to every forth tree or home and then run at normal speed.
I also wear a HRM to measure how hard I am working. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I think you should do a mix of both. I do long runs, short runs, hill sprints, regular sprints and mix them up. Yes, they will wear you out quicker and they should be hard. I usually do a 30 sec sprint followed by a 60 sec jog for 30-40 minutes on sprint days.0

I agree about mixing them up. Do sprints on some days and long runs on others. You might also do light runs on days after intense sprinting, to prevent lactic acid from building up too much.0
