There seems to be a lot of debate about whether a calorie is a calorie. It makes sense to me that sugar and starch will spike blood sugar more than eggs and chicken breast. Is this true or not? If I eat nothing but ice cream and beer will I still loose weight as long as I keep my calories under the limit? I've heard that alcohol causes extra stress on your liver thereby slowing down the work that your liver needs to do on regular groceries. I'd like know what the reality is. Not that I want to eat a diet of ice cream and beer, but....

I mean this nicely, but you should start your own thread, as this is off-topic here.

I got through a tub of Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup over a few days last week. Still lost weight. A calorie is a calorie, the quality of that calorie varies nutritionally but for weight loss it makes no difference.

If you're speaking strictly in terms of weight gain/loss, a calorie is a calorie.

If you're speaking in terms of things like health or satiety, a calorie from one source MAY be a better choice than a calorie from a different source, but that also depends on the big picture of the person's overall diet.

Context makes a huge difference, but most people around here forget (ignore) that and just end up yelling at each other.

Hit all your macros, toss in some veggies, leave some room in the calorie deficit for ice cream. Or a cookie. All good. Weight is lost.

That perfectly sums up my approach to eating. I have targets for calories, protein, servings of fruits/vegetables (I have a personal goal to incorporate more) and dessert (as in, I eat make sure I can eat dessert every night).

You can simplify it more: Eat a reasonable variety of food types and don't worry about your macros. Unless you have very specific goals or needs, you can be perfectly healthy at 30% carbs or 60%.

Food is chemicals....and chemicals effect your body. Refined foods that spike your insulin...raise the insulin in your blood stream and then it is hard for your body to use fat ( hyper insulinism blocks your fat cells from releasing fat to be used as energy) and so your body will demand energy...If you eat refined foods again...it will spike the blood sugar...and out comes more insulin...quite a vicious cycle. When you eat foods that do not spike the blood sugar...your body can reset...and then start using the fat out of your fat cells...and you will lose weight.

No. Bodies don't reset and I lost weight just fine eating foods that raise my blood sugar.

But lots of "healthy" foods, spike insulin. not just "refined" foods,

Unless a person is diabetic, this is not an issue. Even for diabetics eating appropriately, it's not an issue.
